Dropbox Backup
1100 TopicsWho to contact for many video files lost at Dropbox
A group of us traveled to Germany in June to experience driving racecars on the Nurburg racetrack. As a bucket-list trip, the headcam videos taken of our experience were very important to us. The video files were uploaded to Dropbox but the company we used is now saying that Dropbox does not have the videos anymore. They have said that Dropbox has lost several of their customer's videos and have been told there is nothing Dropbox can do. They will no longer use Dropbox which is a real shame.... Who can I contact within Dropbox to see what options exist? Seems that backups would exist that would enable us to get those video files if we can get to the right person at Dropbox. Appreciate any contacts you can suggest. Dropbox backup seems unable to properly read file system of external ExFAT drive. Drive has 795 GB in use—but for first few days of backup, Dropbox believed drive had 50 GB of data, then 70, then 100, then 120 GB... It claims to be done, but then you navigate online backup and find many folders are empty, so you return to plugging it in... After letting it go on and off for days (constantly exercising drive/making it hot), Dropbox Backup now claims external drive is fully backed up... at 620 GB. Is it? Or is this another bad report? There are now enough files transferred that I don't see obvious empty folders to confirm that Backup is incomplete... but there is still a file size discrepancy of 175 GB. Am I done with backup? Is there more that is missing? How do customers figure this out?33Views0likes1CommentHow to Restore Default Location of Your Personal Folders - ie. Downloads
Hi, I've been trying to figure out how to relocate my Downloads folder to my MacOS and I just don't understand how. Even in order to see my Downloads folder in my Desktop Dropbox Folder location, I have to right click my Downloads folder and select "show in enclosing folder" and then it shows up in transparency. I want my Downloads folder out of Dropbox without loosing its contents. I also want to be able to make sure I don't screw up anything concerning what makes everything save there by default when downloaded. Thank you ahead of time, E.2.7KViews0likes21CommentsHow to delete my Dropbox Backup files
Hello, I saw that my file box is almost full - Personal Dropbox spaceUsing 22.4 GB of 22.75 GB Regular files (107.9 MB) Backup (21.8 GB) Replay (0 bytes) Shared files (443.9 MB) Unused space (388 MB) I am suprised that I have Backup 21,8gb I do not see anywhere what files are those and how to delete them, because I do not use any backups on dropbox. Can anyone please tell how to delete them, because I do not know even where they are stores and there are no folders with name Backup.70Views0likes6CommentsBackup Status Report
I'd like a report which shows the current status of Dropbox Backup for all of the machines I administer: Enabled / Disabled [Username]/folder(s) This is important because some of our machines are shared If we can further differentiate "Enabled / Disabled" by "Enabled on some accounts", that'd be amazing, but I'd need to be able to blacklist some accounts: I don't want a local admin account (which we expect to have no persistent data) to show up in the list. If we can't do that, then just [Username]/folder(s) would be sufficient for my usecase Storage space used I understand that there's a Dropbox Backup activity report, but that is (in practice) impossible to parse into current status. (Yes, I'm crazy: I tried.)41Views0likes1CommentCannot delete old backup. Can you help?
Hello, There is a 15.2GB backup (KINGSTON external drive & CLIENT) stuck in my Dropbox account. I no longer have this device and the Dropbox app does not show any backup in Preferences → Backup. I cannot remove this ghost backup by myself, and it is taking up my storage space. Please help delete this leftover backup from my account. Thank you!Solved133Views0likes13CommentsI can't access my old Backup online, ever since I disable it when preparing to wipe my old laptop.
Scenario: I was preparing my old laptop (a Macbook Pro) for sale and I did not want Dropbox Backup to interpret my wipe / reset activities as a mass deletion of all my files, so I disabled Backup (and Sync) before doing so. My assumption was that the last known good backup would be retained. Upon setting up my new MBP, I dutifully installed Dropbox and navigated to https://www.dropbox.com/backup/all to find my old backup — all my backups are usually listed here, and double-clicking one of them usually allows me to view the contents of that backup and to download individual files from it. To my horror, I found out on this occasion that THE OLD BACKUP HAD DISAPPEARED! The new backup (for the new MBP) as well as my other backups for my other devices were still in the list, but the old backup was conspicuous by its absence. I flew into a panic. There is a 'Show/Hide deleted backups' button on that screen, and clicking it revealed my missing / disabled backup. Double-clicking this now-unhidden backup entry did nothing. Panic intensifies. After a long discussion with Support, I noticed that if I hover over any of my backups, the URL shown is of the format "http://www.dropbox.com/backups/ {machine ID} ? {some querystring stuff}" and if I just use the first part up to and including the machine ID (i.e.: http://www.dropbox.com/backups/machineID ) then I could view my old backup just like the others. TL:DR; Dropbox Backup will hide disabled backups and seemingly will not let you access them, but there's a workaround. I think this is either a bug, or an unintentional side-effect of hiding disabled backups. I think there should still be an option to view the contents of a disabled backup, either through the existing double-click functionality or via the ellipsis menu. In any case, a disabled backup should not be marked as 'deleted' and I hope this does not mean it will be automatically deleted from my account after 30 days.44Views0likes2CommentsI enabled computer backup on my new Win11 device, but Dropbox is stuck indexing.
I am having trouble with Dropbox on a new Windows 11 PC. It is a bit confusing so bare with me... I used a program called "PC Mover" by Laplink to do transfer my old Win10 PC to a new Win11 PC - it transfers data as well as OS settings and apps. It went very well (I have done this dozens of times) but the one thing that is not working well is Dropbox. On the old Win10 PC, my user folders were re-directed into Dropbox so they would be viewable from other devices. I did not use the "Back up" feature on the old PC, instead I told Windows to redirect those folders into my Dropbox folder. PC Mover does not transfer redirected user folders, so I figured I would have to redirect the new, empty, user folders on the new PC to the synched user folders in Dropbox. I have done this successfully with OneDrive many times. However, after the PC Mover transfer was complete, the Dropbox folder on the new PC did not show the old PC's user folders! I thought maybe this was by design? Anyways, I had to then manually copy those folders over from the old PC to the default user folders on the new PC. Thinking there might be a conflict if I redirected my new user folders into Dropbox (surely the old user folders are still there but just invisible now?), I decided to turn on the Back Up feature in Dropbox to redirect these folders. My user folders now appear in Dropbox but within a folder named "PC 4". However - new items that I put in Dropbox (both in user folders and at root level of Dropbox) do NOT seem to be synching to the cloud, they do not show up on the old PC, and the new PC dropbox has been saying "indexing" for over 24 hours now. I uninstalled and reinstalled dropbox but same thing. New items that I put in the old PC dropbox doe not show up in the New PC dropbox but they do show up on the web. I am confused and not sure how to resolve this! Any advice would be appreciated.49Views0likes6CommentsHow to view Backup folder on DropBox app?
Greetings community! Previously, I used to be able to see my Mac represented on my Dropbox as a folder (I had enabled the backup option). This was super convenient because I could easily access my files on-the-go using my Dropbox iPhone app. However, due to a computer issue, I needed to wipe my MacBook Pro clean and reinstall everything (including Dropbox). I enabled backup for my MacBook. However, now, it doesn't show me the MacBook folder like it used to. So I can't access my files on the go. It shows me that I have backed up my files and I am able to see them through a web browser. However, the folder representing my MacBook (backup) has stopped showing on Dropbox. Is this due to some update in how backups work now for Dropbox on Mac? How do I get the backup folder to start showing up on Dropbox again. Thanks!7.4KViews1like26Comments
