Dropbox Backup

I am backing up an external drive on macos and it seems to be stuck updating a pdf that has a hash for the filename - probably a mail attachment deep in a mail directory. Unlike a couple of toher files, where VBackup has alerted me to illegal characters, there is no notificaiton. Aside from searching for that file and renaming it (it won't be the only one for sure). where are the Dropbox Backup log files stored? I've looked in ~/Library/Application Support/Dropbox and in /Library/Application Support but I don't see any logs or Backup, only some binary logs for Dropbox. thanks, JulianSolved48Views0likes5CommentsProper procedure for re-linking (adopting) backed up external drive on a new computer?
Hi all, I'm only backing up an external hard drive with Dropbox Backup. I wiped and reinstalled my Mac (Sonoma 14.2.1) and reinstalled Dropbox. Dropbox has created a new backup of the external drive and has called it External Drive (1). I see my proper backup (External Drive) files on the web. I just want to not have to upload 3.5TB of data and have Dropbox recognize that it's the same drive I've been previously backing up. The name of the external drive has not changed. There's currently a black x on the Dropbox icon. When I click, it says my Dropbox is full and that I'm using 3.5TGB of my 45GB of personal Dropbox space. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thanks for any help!Solved1KViews0likes6CommentsScheduled camera uploads
I would like to schedule my Camera Uploads so that I have a chance to remove/organize things before they're uploaded. Ideally I could have options to set either the time or frequency - i.e. 2am every day, or "any item older than 6 hours." Two examples (on android) today: Sometimes I take 2 or 3 photos in order to choose the best one and delete the others. But even if I delete them quickly, dropbox is too efficient(!) and they've already upload there, where i have to clean them up again. If I take a screenshot and then edit it to add, say pen coverage, it uploads to dropbox as 2 files, even if I save over the original locally. Often I'm annotating an image to text to someone, but don't need it backed up in dropbox at all, so I'd delete it before uoload.88Views1like4CommentsI'm trying to back up my external hard drive, but there's no option under my desktop app settings.
Hello! I back up my Mac with Time Machine to an external hard disk that is APFS formatted. When I go to manage backups in the Dropbox desktop app settings, this hard disk is not displayed for a backup, only the Mac. What could be the reason for this problem? Thank you! This thread ‘File corrupted and cannot be restored from the version history’ here on the Community got me thinking ... it reminded me of how important file recovery tools can be, especially when things go a bit sideways 😬. So I thought I’d put together a quick guide on how to restore files using Dropbox, just in case you ever find yourself in a similar situation 🛠️. We’ve all been there. You delete a file by mistake 🗑️ or maybe overwrite something important and suddenly you realise you need to get it back. The good news? When you’re using Dropbox, restoring files is straightforward ✅. Here’s how it works and what you need to know ⬇️ 🔍 Check your Deleted files If you have accidentally deleted something, start by checking the Deleted files page on Dropbox.com. You can find it in the left-hand sidebar once you’ve signed in. From there: Browse or search for the file or folder you want to recover Click on it and select Restore By default, Dropbox keeps deleted files for 30 days (or longer if you’re on a Business, Professional or team account with extended version history). So as long as you’re within that time frame, recovery is possible 🕒. 🕰️ Restoring earlier versions If you didn’t delete the file but made changes you regret, Dropbox can help with that too. We keep a version history of your files, so you can go back in time and restore a previous version. Here’s how: Open Dropbox.com and find the file Click the three dots beside it, then choose Version history Pick the version you want to bring back and click Restore This works really well for documents that get edited regularly 📝 – especially if you’re collaborating with others and need to undo changes. 📱💻 Using the mobile app or desktop While the web version gives you full control over file recovery, you can also use the Dropbox mobile app to view deleted files or earlier versions. It’s a bit more limited, but good for quick fixes on the go. On the desktop app, any restored file will sync back to your device automatically once you’ve completed the restore online – so there’s no need to manually re-download it 🔁. ❓ What if I still can’t find a file? If you’re still not seeing the file you need or you’re unsure when it was deleted, it’s worth checking with your team admin (if you’re on a team account), or you may be able to find your answer here on the Community 🤝. 💬 Got questions? Or maybe a story to share? Hey, if you’ve ever had one of those moments where Dropbox saved the day – whether it helped you recover a last-minute report, saved your college project 🎓, or just rescued a file you thought was gone for good … drop a comment below ⬇️. It’s always so cool to hear how these features are helping our Community members 💙.30Views2likes0CommentsMy external drive was disconnected while backing up, and now I can't resume the process.
I started a backup with an external drive, but it was accidentally disconnected in the middle of the backup. Now, Dropbox says it's a complete backup and is not. When I plug in the drive, it's not recognized. I have restarted my computer. I have restarted the Dropbox application. I have plugged it in and unplugged the drive.47Views0likes1CommentRe-installation of Dropbox on Mac OS Sequoia results in issues with File Provider symlinks
I recently attempted to perform some cloudstorage migration, but in the end stuck with dropbox. Somehow the installation of dropbox was affected. Previously, dropbox symlinked /Users/X/Library/Dropbox/Mac/Desktop/ with the /Users/X/Desktop/ directory allowing the desktop to be synced with dropbox which was great Now, the desktop remains as a local only /Users/X/Desktop and an additional folder named 'Dropbox' is created like so: /Users/X/Library/Dropbox/Mac/Desktop/Dropbox I have tried multiple reinstalls, toggling dropbox for file provider on and off by signing in and out and enabling or disabling dropbox backups of the Mac/Desktop folder to no avail. I have also performed advanced-reinstalls but the desktop remains unsymlinked https://help.dropbox.com/installs/advanced-reinstall Any help would be welcomeSolved73Views0likes5CommentsMacOS: desktop folders are now aliases - How can I switch back?
So my Desktop, Documents, and Downloads folders are no longer folders, but rather aliases to these folders within the dropbox folder. I understand that this is because at some point they were set to be backed up by dropbox. Unfortunately this is completely breaking when I try to use migration assistant to move to a new machine. Not everything is copied over - a bunch of these folders are missing - and the aliases themselves are broken. I want to go back to these folders being real folders and no longer aliases so that I can do the migration. Is it as simple as turning off backups in Dropbox? Will it then move these folders back to where they are supposed to be? Will that delete the backed up files on Dropbox because they have now been removed from the backups? I've read this: "https://help.dropbox.com/organize/delete-dropbox-backup" but it just talks about deleting a backup. I don't want my files deleted. I just want them back to where they belong. I will be doing a time-machine backup before I make any changes to make sure I get everything. But I would also love it if the migration assistant just worked out of the box. Bonus question: I have been reading that Dropbox is changing how it works on MacOS... that there is a "new way" of managing files that would change the above behavior. It would be storing data in ~/Library/CloudStorage. Is this something I should change to be using? If so, how? And what are the consequences of making this change? I've read this: "https://help.dropbox.com/installs/dropbox-for-macos-support" but it is very technical and does not really tell me what the difference is for an end user - i.e. where will my files be stored? How is it different than the way Dropbox worked before from an end user perspective. Thanks!Solved113Views0likes3CommentsBackup is not saving the files from the folders I selected
I've installed dropbox yesterday, been trying to setup the backup service. Followed all the steps, but it seems to not be working correctly, it takes a looong time for it to finally finish the backup, if it'll finish at all, even though it's just a 1,47gb backup. There immediately comes in the main problem, i've selected my docs, pictures and videos to be saved with the backup, but it ain't doing that. Any clue on how to fix this? Since this is pretty annoying, paying for nothing atm.18Views0likes1Comment
