Dropbox Basic
189 TopicsHow do I delete files from Dropbox without deleting them from my computer and other devices?
I do not use Dropbox for backup storage; I use a different service for that. But friends and fellow students sometimes want to share files in Dropbox, so I set up a free account. Somehow, I don't know how, Dropbox uploaded some of my photos to the cloud and filled up my basic Dropbox space. I would like to take my photos out of Dropbox WITHOUT DELETING THEM FROM MY COMPUTER or other devices. This would give me the Dropbox space that I need for sharing. But when I try to do that, Dropbox says that it will delete my photos from all my devices! How can I empty my Dropbox without deleting my photos from my devices?Solved85KViews6likes46CommentsHow can I stream a video to my website from Dropbox but from dropbox online?
Hi Guys, So I will try and explain best I can. This is my website https://www.progressivedreamsmusic.com/ and this is a page on my website where I stream videos https://www.progressivedreamsmusic.com/a-progressive-journey-50/ The video that plays on the above page is hosted on my desktop in my dropbox pubic folder. I use a widget within wordpress (on my site) called FV Flowplayer Video Player that allows me to embed videos like this. What I do is copy the link of the video I want to stream and I paste it in FV Player, I change the end of the link from '?dl=0' to '?raw=1', I am not exactly sure why but without this the video won't play. Anyway, without that out of the way you can see what I am doing, but because over time this will take up lots of space on my desktop I want to know how I can stream a video from my online dropbox account like this? I want to store these very large video files in dropox cloud, maybe a public folder on my online account? Basically I want to not eat up my computers hhd space and instead do this via online instead Can anyne help me ?Solved24KViews1like2CommentsDeleted files keep reappearing
Hi all, I know that many threads on this issue exist in the forum, but I couldn't find anyone that helped in my case, or the issues are slightly different. Before contacting support directly I thought that it might be good to describe it here in the forum (and hopefully someone can help me :)). I have in my dropbox a couple of PDF files in the main Dropbox folder and a subfolder (which has also one subfolder with ca. a hundred PDF files) that always keep reappearing after I deleted them, usually within half an hour (sometimes it happens instantly). They are not shared. I got this issue only very recently, and some time after I upgraded to Dropbox Plus (last month). Before, I had Dropbox Basic and I really never had this issue (which makes it even more frustrating). I have tried everything that I could possibly imagine. I unlinked all of my devices, reinstalled Dropbox, I reverted to an older version of the files, I put them on the hard drive and back again in Dropbox, I (permanently) deleted them in the browser...nothing helps. When I rename them, they are still added with the original name (the renamed copies stay - I probably could multiply them infinitely like that). These files are not old files from two years ago (saw some people in the forum having this issue). The issue appeared when I put these files and folders originally at the same place where they keep reappering now with their original name. Last week, I moved them to another folder and renamed them, but they stayed in my Dropbox. So I have these files/folders with different names and directory, but their "original" versions keep reappearing at their "original" place. It's a bit like these "original" files are stuck in the cloud servers forever, and they are always put back like that in my own Dropbox. I don't know if there was an issue with the syncing, or some other technical problem. It can also be something I did wrong, though I don't really know what. As I said, never had these issues before and use Dropbox a lot, on at least three devices regularly (Mac and Windows). No device has been added shortly before or since I have this issue. I hope that I could describe my problem with as many details as possible, and hopefully as clear as possible. Thank you very much in advance for your help!Solved24KViews2likes11CommentsFiles and folders not syncing across and within devices
I am using Dropbox basic (only 5.2% of space used) on version 53.4.67. I have it installed for two users on the same desktop PC and also on an iPad. I have had to change the PC recently, so I have re-installed DB on this new PC. On my main account, I have unlinked the old PC (which no longer exists). As both users on the PC and on the iPad, I sign in to DB with e-mail address and password. None of the changes I have made to files in my Dropbox folder in the last 24 hours are syncing across to other users - not even between the two users on the same Windows 10 PC. I know this becasuse, in the last 2 hours, I have, on the principal user device: deleted one file - not been deleted on the other two devices; added a new sub folder - not been added to the other two devices; added a new file with a name different to any other file in the DB folder - not been added to the other two devices. I use DB mainly to make changes to music related files, share them with the iPad, and then access them offline in remote locations. I need to do this again within a week, so if this is not solved by then, I am stuffed. Why is there no opportunity to do a 'manual' sync, or force a sync? Given that DB is about sharing the latest same version of files between devices and it is not actually doing this, then it is currently totally useless as far as I am concerned. Help!!!Solved21KViews1like20CommentsVery confused with regards to Smart Sync
Hi all, I just upgraded my account to Business with the 5TB storage. Prior to this I was using the basic plan which only comes with 2GB. I would use dropbox to upload files (such as videos, and music) from my Mac to my iPhone for auditioning. Now that I've upgraded, i'm very confused on how Smart Sync works. In essence does it backup whatever folders you tell it too, then make changes based on how you change the original files? What is the main difference between Smart Sync and Local only? (I read the article on it but however still confused) My goal with the upgrade is to use Dropbox as central storage, for my team, as well as for personal storage. I would prefer for dropbox to not make changes based on how I edit files on my system. I would like to be in total control of how files on Dropbox itself are edited/deleted. Can anybody point me in the right direction? I've dug through countless articles, watched some outdated videos, and looked in the community but still haven't fully found an answer to how I can accomplish this. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!!Solved11KViews0likes2CommentsPhotographs that are NOT mine in Dropbox - and NOT as a result of using a shared computer!
Hello, I have discovered a folder in my Dropbox entitled 'Camera Uploads' which is full of hundreds of photos and videos that are not mine. The files are dated from August 2012-November 2013 (which by coincidence is likely to be around about the same time that I set up my Dropbox account). I have not had reason to look in the folder before as I thought it was simply a default folder that Dropbox created on signup. At first I thought perhaps the folder had been shared with me accidentally but it turns out it is not a shared folder and Dropbox is telling me that the files were uploaded 'by you' (i.e. me!). Having searched the Dropbox community threads and Google I found someone who had a similar issue and one of the possible reasons given in the thread was that perhaps the user had used a shared computer in the past and left themselves signed into Dropbox and then someone else's phone photos were auto-backed up when they connected. I do not believe this to be the case for me. The reason being is that I looked through all the photos and videos to try to decipher if I knew the owner. I did not. However, one of the photos displayed a gig ticket stub which displayed the surname of the person who bought it - and lo and behold it happens to match my surname. This all seems to point to a scenario where someone with the same name as me was somehow able to sign in to my account and use it to back up their files. Can anyone (at Dropbox or otherwise) explain how this could possibly have happened? This is surely a security issue. The reason I was poking around in the folders is because I was preparing to start using Dropbox for my business needs but this issue has alarmed me and I now have strong doubts about the security of Dropbox, especially for sharing/storing confidential business files. BTW I have now changed my password and I was tempted to delete the folder but I feel kind of bad that I now have someone's personal photos (pics and videos of their kids in the school play etc.). I have tried to get in touch with someone at Dropbox but I currently have the basic free account and my options are limited to a chatbot or this forum (another turnoff - I hate when companies make it impossible to contact them!). Hoping you can help! Thanks, Nat8.5KViews0likes57CommentsChinese characters in my deletion confirmation pop-up on Windows
Hi, Something new happen recently when I was deleting some files. When I delete something from my Dropbox, I get a notice that they're moving the files to the Recycle Bin and then another prompt that asks me if I want to remove those files from all the devices connected to the dropbox. The new thing that happen is the last prompt now contains what appears to be Chinese characters. (Picture attached) I've reinstalled the Dropbox on both devices connected and that hasn't fixed the issue. Does anybody know what this is or how do I fix this? I haven't seen it when using any other program. The characters doesn't appear on the "moving files to the recycle bin" prompt but only on the prompt that comes after which is asking if I want to remove the files from the other connected devices. Also the Chinese characters aren't always in the same location. Sometimes they're beside the Dropbox at the top of the prompt and sometimes they on the "Delete Everywhere" button.Solved8.1KViews1like35CommentsDropbox Website seems to have lost it CSS
Just recently the Dropbox website won't display correctly on any browser - Chrome, Safari, Firefox - it loads fine but shows no Style sheet just basic list form that can't be used properly. I am using a Mac and the other Mac user in my office is also experiencing the same issue.. How on earth do we fix this... it was working fine up until now?Solved7.9KViews3likes15CommentsIntolerable slow speed moving files
https://www.dropboxforum.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/202007985-CPU-usage-making-version-3-intolerable?input_string=Intolerable Basically have the same issue. Very frustrated. I tried to move/delete a single picture from camera upload folder to another folder to organize my pictures, but every time I have to wait about 10 seconds or longer for ONE copy & paste action. I am grateful that I can auto upload all my pictures & videos from my iPhone to the cloud but Dropbox makes it impossible for me to organize them. Now I have tons of pictures & videos that i could impossibly move them out of the camera upload folder. Dropbox discontinued support to 10.5.8 (which was a HUGE inconvenience) where I had dropbox worked perfectly fine for me. Since I was unable to upgrade to newer version on my old iMac and I do find the needs anyway to upgrade my computing power, I decided to purchase a new macbookpro running 10.10.2 w/ i7. Sadly, Dropbox has failed me by using so much of CPU power which makes it impossible for me to move ONE single file from camera upload folder to another. I am not sure if any other user runs into this same problem but this will be my last year of $99 subscription as there are many other competitors out there. Are we in stone age? I mean WINDOWS 98 can perform a copy & paste function better than DROPBOX. Very Frustrated. I have tons of files & videos that will forever pile up in my camera upload folder.7.8KViews6likes8CommentsMoving files out of Dropbox now defaults to the 'copy' function
Starting sometime this week, whenever I try to move a file out of my Dropbox to another location on the same drive, it will default to 'copy' and leave the original still in Dropbox. This duplication now requires that I manually delete the file from my Dropbox if I want to complete the action of relocating a file. However, if I drag a file into my Dropbox from anywhere on the same drive, it will behave normally and 'move' the file without duplication. Moving files within folders in Dropbox also retains the default 'move' function. What is causing this bizarre 'copy' behavior and how do I get rid of it? I want the default drag behavior, within the same drive, to be 'move'.Solved7.8KViews2likes47Comments
