File access
22 TopicsLocal links
Problem In our Dropbox Business account, we often need to share links to files or folders with colleagues who already have access and have Dropbox installed. Currently: When we use the âShareâ feature, the link opens in the browser. This is inefficient when the user just needs to open the local file/folder, especially for deeply nested folders. Or worse, the person sends the file as an email, and now we have multiple versions and confusion about which is the "source of truth". Workaround: We have to manually send them the file path (e.g., /Users/bob/Dropbox/ProjectX/Report.docx), which: Requires the recipient to hunt it down in Finder/Explorer. Is error-prone due to path differences, renames, or accidental typos. Offers a worse user experience than comparable tools like Google Drive File Stream, which can open the file directly via a smart link from the web. Proposed Solution Introduce a new link format â .dropboxlink files â that can be double-clicked or opened to launch the Dropbox desktop app, which then opens the file or folder locally. How it might work: The link includes a Dropbox-relative path (e.g., /ProjectX/Report.docx). When opened, the Dropbox app: Resolves the correct local file path on that device. Brings the file into sync if itâs online-only (with options if needed). Opens the file in its native app or highlights it in Finder/Explorer. Key Benefits Faster collaboration: Opens files/folders locally with one click. Less error-prone than copying/pasting paths. Easier onboarding: Helps users avoid learning about aliases, sync paths, or browser UX differences. Reusable: These .dropboxlink files could be stored on desktops, added to docs, or included in readme files for onboarding. Design Considerations Security: Only opens if user has access. Device-aware: Dropbox app already tracks where the folder is located per device. Fallbacks: If the file is no longer available, provide a browser fallback or a âRequest Accessâ flow. If offline or not synced, offer user-friendly prompts (e.g. âMake available offlineâ).616Views3likes1CommentEnable create and rename folders/files on MacOS Dropbox application for admin users
After a recent dropbox update, at the top level, admin users are unable to create and rename files on their desktop dropbox application for Mac users (OS version: Sequoia 15.3.2). This slight change has made it more of a hassle to use the desktop app, it makes it appear obsolete to be honest. My team needs a number of folders to created frequently as we get new cases quite frequently. After the new update, as the admin user, I have to navigate to my web browser in order to create a folder and then come back to my desktop app to add all the relevant documents into that folder. If I make a mistake in the name of the folder, I can't change the name of the folder I have to go back to web browser, find the folder and then change it from there. It is such that even as an admin user on my computer, when I go to unlock the folder at the top level to give me read and write access, it automatically switches back as it is something that has been enabled from the software and not the user end. I could see the justification for having this restriction for non-admin users but for admin users whose job description requires the creation and modification of top level files, it has added an additional step in work flow that is cumbersome. In the past, all these could be done directly from the desktop app. I would like to request that the feature be put back as it was. The new change is not user friendly at all.512Views4likes11CommentsTab of external users and folders they have access to in Admin Console
Running into the Issue of how do we manage multiple external users. managing external collaborators is a manual nightmare, requiring us to check each shared folder individually or parse unwieldy CSVs from External Sharing reports its driving us crazy338Views2likes7CommentsHide folders from Photos tab
I have a lot of photos in my Dropbox, both edited and raw/unedited files. It would be great with the possibility to hide certain folders from the Photos tab so that e.g. all of the unedited raw files doesn't show up in between the final versions. Also, this would allow hiding folders with other image files that you don't want in your photo collection. This could either be some right-click folder property, or it could be done by adding e.g. a .dropboxhidephotos file to the folder.299Views14likes8CommentsOption to automatically lock a file.
We constantly have issues with conflicted copies! Yes - even though there is the badge that shows up, and even though file locking is an option if done manually. I've done research and MANY other systems support this feature. I've been a long-time Dropbox user, but am looking aggressively at changing due to this issue. It shouldn't have to be a manual process to prevent someone else from opening the same file I am currently working on and saving a conflicted copy. Who would remember to do a manual file lock each and every time they open a document?!225Views2likes3CommentsPDF Bookmarks access
It would be so very helpful to be able to access pdf bookmarks. Our Board of Directors often has a large packet of materials and we use DropBox to store the file for viewing. We prefer DropBox because we can create a link that is not downloadable. However, navigating 1,000 pages is challenging, and bookmarks are so much friendlier and easier than hyperlinks to pages/sections. Especially because I haven't quite figured out the easiest way to add a "back to top" to all pages, in the blink of an eye. I have a very limited time to create my board packet, adding docs at the last minute, or replacing pages even after sent to the board. Bookmarks just work BETTER. Thank you for listening. The new Dropbox sync info window (v224.4.4811, 2025) is too vague, especially for large folders (e.g., my 350GB folder). It shows â74 files remainingâ but doesnât list which files or whatâs happening (e.g., redownloading, indexing). Older versions had better sync details. Please add these features to the sync info window: Clickable Files: Allow clicking on files in the sync window to open them directly in their location. Show Waiting Folders/Files: Display a clear list of folders and files waiting to sync, including their paths and sizes, to identify bottlenecks. Giving clear marking of files that are yet to sync or not. Detailed Sync Info: Provide specific details (e.g., file name, progress percentage, status like âdownloadingâ or âverifyingâ) for each file/folder in the sync queue, similar to pre-2020 versions. Also any permission errors. These changes would make sync tracking transparent and user-friendly, especially for large datasets. Thanks for considering! Currently I feel this is amazing that it is not standard. The last option is for having a simple way to have mutliple folders for mutliple windows users. Currently it is almost impossilbe to use the same drop box folder for two users.156Views0likes2CommentsComment without Login
I'm sharing photos and videos, as well as production documents with clients and love to get their feedback on the specific file. However, many companies prohibit employees from generating their own Dropbox account, which is needed to comment on the files. How about just having to "sign up" with their Name and Email in order to get notifications? Would love to have an easier way to share files with clients and get their feedback as simple as possible.141Views1like1Comment
