648 TopicsHow to back up my Dropbox folder on an external drive?
Running Windows 11 Pro. I recently re-installed Dropbox to retrieve files still stored on the cloud. The default install put the folder location "C:\Users\michaelmunson\Dropbox" I attempted to change the folder location by going to Preferences > Sync > Dropbox folder location. I changed the location to the external drive where I wanted it to be. After a LONG time, there was a quick pop up error message that said that not all files could be transferred. (I dont know which ones and can't find a log with details.) When I open file explorer, I am still seeing dropbox in the original location (c:\users\) AND the new location (d:\dropbox\). When I check back in preferences under sync, the dropbox folder location is still showing the original (C:\users\). When I tried to do the process again to move it to the D drive, a pop up box noted that there was already a desktop.ini file on the D drive and it could not move the files. Any idea of how I can get dropbox to show up ONLY on the external drive? I ONLY want to be able to download ALL of the content to the external drive. I dont' need it to sync and don't plan on having this as a dynamic file location with new or changing files. This is simply a back up of prior files. Thanks for any help. michael18Views0likes1CommentFeedback on long backend processes
I had a scary event just now. I renamed a large folder (60GB, 150K files). I got a message it would take some time. So :I sat and waited for the operation to complete. In the meantime, I saw the new folder appear, with some content. Then the content was gone. Then all my files appeared in the deleted files section and only after about 15 minutes, everything completed OK. I won't lie, I was somewhat scared. I suggest the web UI provide some progress indication for this and similar long operations.Solved44Views0likes1CommentHow can I get the Mac system folder 'Documents' into the Dropbox folder

I use DropBox to support my hobbies including YouTube, sewing, embroidery and cosplay. DropBox is a fabulous resource for backing up files and ensuring I don't lose digital assets such as sewing patterns (PDF) and images of my fabric stash for planning purposes. Embroidery machines use fairly unique file types and DropBox does not support the following file types: .art, .dst, .exp, .hus, .jef, .pcs, .pes, .sew, .vip, .vp3, and .xxx. I'm unable to use DropBox to support my embroidery hobby to backup/centralize/organize these specific assets.55Views0likes3CommentsCan't choose multiple files
Device Lenovo, iPad pro Operating System/Browser (if using the web) (Windows 11, Question or Issue Dropbox has become my favorite cloud storage. I love it. I love how easy it is to find files. Hi! I don't have too much space on my PC to download all my files via Dropbox Desktop App. My goal is the backup all my files saved to Dropbox to an external drive. After I copy the downloaded files to an external drive, how can I then delete them from my PC to free up more space without it syncing and deleting the files from Dropbox.com?66Views0likes6CommentsWant some files in Dropbox left only on my laptop, not synced
Without my knowledge, Dropbox synced all of my personal files to its system and now I'm over limit. I do not want to lose my files so how do I get my stuff back to my computer and off dropbox so they don't get destroyed?34Views0likes2CommentsHow can I move a shared folder I don't own out of my root directory?
I have clicked on a link to see a shared folder for which I have editing privilege. The folder is in my dropbox in the root directory, but it is no use to me there, I need it in another place in the directory structure. I cannot see how to move it, I can move the directories inside the main folder, but then it will disappear form the other peoples dropbox. I do not mind having two copies of it all as I have the space, but need to find a way to either move the main directory or the sub directory's to a different location within my dropbox without causing an issue to the person who shared with me and keep two way link enabled. I am doing this online in the web application, I do not use the desktop application, Thank you79Views0likes4CommentsFolder "files on my computer" re-occurring

Dropbox creates automatically the folder "files on my computer" and after I delete it the folder re-appare in an infinite loop. Anyone had the same issue and found a solution to not show this folder on my desktop?Solved421Views0likes2CommentsBest way to collect client uploads in one Dropbox folder and sort by client and date
I’m looking for some guidance on the best way to set up a streamlined upload flow for multiple clients. Goal I’d like to have a single upload point (for example, one shared link or form) that allows multiple clients to upload files without logging in. Ideally, when they upload: They provide their email address or name Dropbox automatically routes those files into a folder structure like: Client Name (or email) → Submission date → Uploaded files So, over time I’d end up with something like /Client A/email@clienta.com/2025-11-14/…files /Client B/email@clientb.com/2025-11-20/…files etc. Questions Is there a native Dropbox feature (e.g. File Requests or similar) that can: accept uploads from multiple people via one URL, and also capture who uploaded what in a way that could be used to organise files per client? If not fully possible natively, what’s the best-practice approach people have used? Multiple File Requests? Dropbox + a form tool (Typeform, Jotform, etc.) + Zapier/Make to create folders and move files based on email address? Any recommended automations / templates that already do this? I’m comfortable using third-party automation tools if needed, but I’d love to understand what’s realistically achievable within Dropbox first, and what the most robust setup would be.97Views0likes3Comments
