Shared Folders
114 TopicsIs there an easy fix for accidentally dragging folders to different locations?
Device HP Z2 Tower G4 Operating System/Browser (if using the web) Windows 10 Dropbox App Version (if using the app) 241.4.4795 I have an ongoing issue with folders in our Dropbox Plus account. We use dropbox for our small company and we have a top level dropbox folder for each of our projects. All folders are owned by my boss (not me). Once in a while I will accidentally drag a top level folder into another folder. Dropbox for some reason allows this drag. But when I go to undo it, then Dropbox tells me that I don't own the folder and I can't move it back! The folder is then stuck in another folder! The only solution I have found to fix this so far is to move the folder back on the website. However this breaks the sharing for the folder so that my boss and any collaborators no longer have access to the folder! I then have to re-share the folder every time I accidentally drag them! This seems very silly, if I don't own the folder and can't move it back, why does Dropbox let me move it in the first place! Is there some better way to fix this?35Views0likes1CommentThere are files missing from a folder that I share with another user.

Hello, I'm on an ASUS Zenbook running Windows 11. I have a shared dropbox folder that constantly has files getting wiped/copied (when they get copied they are empty) showing up on the dropbox. It always shows me editing the file and its usually multiple at the exact same time. All the files have nothing in them and instead are blank. I know you can restore the file but its been happening for months and across multiple different shared folders and its honestly a headache to fix. Help appreciated, thanks in advance.194Views0likes9CommentsThe recipients of my shared folders are moving files out of them. How can I stop that?
Device Multiple Operating System/Browser (if using the web) Multiple Dropbox App Version (if using the app) Multiple Question or Issue I provide image files to my clients by inviting them to DropBox folders I create for their specific company within my single user account. Often there are several contacts at one firm that all need access to the files. I set all permissions to View. Often clients do not realize that when they are clicking and dragging folders and image files they are in fact moving them out of the DropBox folder. How can I prevent this automatic click and drag move of files? Or, how can I tell when this happens so I can be more proactive in restoring these files and educating clients again about being aware of this issue? This is an incredibly tedious and frustrating quirk of DropBox. Thanks for any insights. Darren57Views0likes1CommentIf I delete my Dropbox account, what happens to shared files and folders?
If I delete my dropbox account and I am the owner of shared folder, will the other people still have access to that shared folder and all the shared content? If not, what do I need to do so they can still have access.Solved3.9KViews0likes3CommentsI need to permanently delete my files, but I get message "x items couldnât be permanently deleted".
When I wanted to permanently delete a file or folder (which I may have shared with others or not). I used to be able to delete it in Finder and then would get asked by Dropbox: Delete "untitled folder" from everyone's account and all devices? I then confirm with "Delete for everyone" and proceed to empty the trash on my Mac. Now I log on to my Dropbox account, go to "Deleted files" and select the ones I want to permanently delete. Then confirm this and they were gone, space would be freed up. Well, gone are those glory days of simplicity, because: NOW I get told by Dropbox: "File XYZ will be gone forever for everyone, including for anyone still using the folder. Permanently deleting this folder wonât free up space." I confirm by selecting "Permanently delete" NOW I get the message: "x items couldnât be permanently deleted" Dropbox tells me â uselessly: "What you can do": "Ask the owner to help permanently delete this" I AM the #!*„ owner, aren't I? Plus, didn't clicking "Delete for everyone" on the desktop version make it clear that ALL those files have to go? Shurely this is a recent bug. It wasn't such a hassle before to get rid of old files. Or am I missing something? GrrrrrSolved18KViews3likes10CommentsDeliberate omission of critical folders for Basic accounts.
I would like to bring to your attention a concerning practice that appears to affect free-tier users. Dropbox is not any more secure without external backup. It has become evident that certain shared folders (which are visible and accessible in read-only mode under a single account) are intentionally excluded from backups and event logging for users on the free plan. This omission makes it effectively impossible to track or recover any changes or deletions, as: Backup history is almost not available for free accounts. Event and activity logs are retained for only 30 days in the free tier. No relevant events or actions appear in the logs, even when changes or deletions are suspected. This issue has been reported and discussed by multiple users across various forums and communities, with many suspecting that folders are being deliberately hidden or removed in free accounts as a way to pressure users into upgrading to a paid subscription.69Views0likes2CommentsHow can I share files within a folder in a specific order?
Question or Issue I'm a pro photographer and I use dropbox to deliver photos to my clients. I number each photo (i.e. "Smith-1, Smith-2, Smith-3, etc...). Dropbox used to share them in order (lowest number to highest) now they share in reverse order (highest number to lowest). I want to change this back to the way it was but I'm having no luck figuring it out. Any help??Solved156Views0likes5Comments
