To accelerate its discoveries of the human mind, UCL’s neuroscience research department turned to the cloud. Working collaboratively, using Dropbox business, the team at UCL could share results faster with other scientists around the world and avoid unnecessary duplication of work, sharing data in a more connected way than ever before. ‘I used to have to wait until the evening before I could see the results and data from that day’s lab work. Often it wouldn’t be available for a day or two and this would be frustrating and it was slowing down our work. Then we had this idea, why not incorporate Dropbox Business into how we work. And it transformed how we work and now as lab work data is generated it is shared using Dropbox Business.’ - Dr Tiago Branco, Senior Research Fellow. You can read more of Dr Branco’s thoughts here. We love to hear how Dropbox Business works differently for people in a variety of industries, whether it’s scientific research, media, creative industries - there is always a way to improve how we work and make collaboration the easy part of your day. For the past eight centuries, the University’s of Cambridge has been home to eminent mathematicians, scientists, philosophers, and heads of state. Plenty of things might have changed from those days until now, but The University of Cambridge is still proudly at the forefront of progress in so many different fields. Obviously, education is in the middle of a big change right now, with a huge push towards studying and teaching remotely, but The University of Cambridge have been looking into and adopting collaborative working for a few years now. When they conducted an audit back in 2017, it uncovered over 250 unique use cases of staff and students needing a collaboration tool, which made it a priority solution to be implemented, to ensure staff and students have access to everything they beed at their fingertips. That’s when they teamed up with Dropbox to create a new system of collaborative work for their students and staff. We can’t help but think that that list must have expanded now, so a head start on collaborative work must have made the shift easier in recent weeks and months. While a lot of us are moving to remote work and study as a matter of public health, there are opportunities in higher education for collaboration that makes a whole new way of work possible. Considering Cambridge has been an institution of further education long before and after Galileo’s lifetime, it’s fascinating to see that Prof. Richard G. McMahon and his team at the Institute of Astronomy adopted Dropbox for its ease of use and sharing abilities for modern astronomy. Currently looking for quasars using telescopes from across the world, Professor McMahon is often remote, working from different time zones and collaborating with his Cambridge researchers back on campus. "Its scalability and ease of use are key factors in us making Dropbox available to everyone at the University. We want to offer the best choice of collaboration tools for our staff and students so they can focus on their important work, and Dropbox fits perfectly into this." Ferrar stated. There is a lot of change coming quickly in the education space, and it’s opening a lot of options that were previously not possible, like online learning for the majority, collaboration spanning beyond one campus and more. What do you think will be the biggest change in education in the near future?Amy6 years agoCommunity Manager232KViews5likes0CommentsCommunity Member of The Month - March 2025
Wow how are we 3 months into 2025 already? Here (in Ireland), March brought longer days, the first hints of spring and of course, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. While the weather might still be unpredictable, one minute sunshine, the next a sudden downpour, one thing that remains constant is the kindness and support within our Community. This month, we are especially excited as we introduce our very first Community Member of the Month for 2025! And that honour goes to wetenhr Despite only joining last month, wetenhr has already embraced the true spirit of the Community. A perfect example of this was when they returned to a thread to update another user who had the same issue, letting them know that while it might take some time depending on their device, it worked for them. Their genuine enthusiasm and helpful nature embody what makes this Community so special, and we are incredibly grateful for all the support they have provided . By providing a solution on the Community, they have not only helped others but demonstrated their passion for Dropbox. Congratulations, wetenhr thank you for making our Community a better place. Shared folders are one of the easiest ways to collaborate with others while using Dropbox. Having a shared space makes everything simpler when you’re working on a project, sharing family photos or keeping your teams files all organised. But you might be wondering: Does this shared folder take up space in my Dropbox account? And what if I no longer need access - how do I leave it? Does a Shared Dropbox Folder Count Toward My Storage? It depends on how the folder was share with you and what level of access you have. Here’s how to check: Sign in to dropbox.com and click All files. Look for folders with a two-person icon 👥 - these are shared folders. Hover over the folder name and click the “…” (More) menu. Choose Share → then Settings. You’ll see one of these options: Can edit → the folders contents do take up space in your Dropbox account Can view → the folders contents don’t count toward your space Tip: You can also check shared folders directly from the Dropbox desktop app - the 2 person icon works the same way there too. How to Leave a Shared Dropbox Folder I No Longer Need If you see “Can edit” and you no longer need access, it’s really easy to remove yourself from the folder. Here’s how: Go to dropbox.com and sign in. Click Shared in the left sidebar. Find the folder you want to leave. Click the “…” (More) button next to it. Select Leave folder → and confirm. Once you leave: The shared folder and its files are removed from your Dropbox. They’ll no longer count toward your storage. Other members will still have access as usual. If you originally created the shared folder, you’ll need to transfer ownership before leaving. To do that: Open the folder’s Share settings. Click the dropdown beside another member’s name. Select Make owner → then leave the folder. That way, everyone who needs it still has access and the ownership transfers smoothly. And that’s it! Keeping your Dropbox account organised is a simple way to make more room for what matters most - your ideas, projects and memories. If you ever change your mind and want back into a folder in the future, just ask the owner to share it with you again. Got questions about shared folders?
