Would Dropbox "remove" something if my storage was full?

Is there a setting that got activated which may not be showing me older files before a certain period?
They also mark accounts as inactive and delete files of that account if not accessed in 12 months: https://help.dropbox.com/account-access/email-about-inactive-account
They would only delete data you own, however, not anybody elses. Which could explain why only some in the share has gone.
The storage thing is the most likely scenario. I easily go 6 to 8 months without going into it but never 12 months. If they did remove it because of storage issues, is that lost to me completely?
