    Thanks very much for your reply Jay​ - it looks like I may have made a complete mistake, I'm sorry. When I go to Recent Documents in my word processor (LibreOffice Writer) and hover over the files, it shows that I apparently actually saved them to a folder on my hard drive. I thought, because Microsoft Word does this (I think), that I could check the folder location by going to Save As (i.e. that Save As would start with the option of the current folder), and that did indeed start at the folder they were supposed to be in. But it looks like Writer works differently and starts from the folder you're working in with other open files.

    Thank you for the time you took to reply and sorry for the misleading post! In any case, it's a relief to discover that I do not (I hope) have disappearing files.
