"Follow" Folder Option Grayed Out

Someone has shared a folder with me, and I want to "follow" the folder so that I get emails when a file is added or changed.  When I over over the ellipses for the folder, the "follow" option is grayed out and not available.  How do I follow this folder that has been shared with me?

    ***you have to share the file first***

     

    After that the grayed out option becomes available.
