How do I leave a shared Dropbox folder?
My friend invited me to share a 3gb folder she had. I accepted. Now I want to leave the folder and cant. I followed the advice from:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZoTpNkvPCI
The problem is that no folders appear under 'Sharing' in my Dropbox so I cant remove myself. I also looked for other ways to leave the folder but see no option to remove myself.
Any ideas on how?
Thanks
- Hey Padidto5,To remove yourself from the shared folder while you’re a member, try doing so from the website:
- Sign in to the website.
- Click Files.
- Navigate to the shared folder you want to permanently remove from your Dropbox account.
- Select the Share button that should appear next to the folder when you hover over it.
- Find your name under the list of emails.
- Click on the Can view/Can edit that’s next to your name.
- Select Remove my access.
If you’re not seeing this option or you’re still having trouble with this, let me know.

Hi,
It is a difficult problem to deal with.
No I haven’t found the solution yet. There were some good tips but they didn’t solve the problem.
The fact is that you cannot remove yourself from a shared folder in case the owner gave you the permission to edit. And if you once opened that folder in your dropbox account, you cannot delete it without causing trouble for the other folder members: the folder will be deleted from dropbox for everyone with whom the folder is shared!
I didn’t found out yet if it will be deleted for the owner too.
Although the owner can put the folder in dropbox again its a problem you do not want.
In the mean time my free account is full and I cannot use dropbox anymore for which I need it.
In the end I started distrusting dropbox. To me it seems they do everything to let you choose for a paid account which really is not cheap.
I hope someone else can help you!

Hey regan_traphagen and hilje, sorry to see you're having trouble with this process.
Have you tried removing your access to the folder using these steps on dropbox.com?
I can see you mentioned that you used an iPad, hilje, are you able to do this from a computer?

Hi,
Thx. It worked. A bit different than the advices in the dropbox help pagina you referred to, probably because of the IPad.
I found the option of deleting the map just and only for myself in “mapinstellingen” ( dutch) an option which was showed after taken the first step in the link you shared.
So thank you. Finally solved!

Thanks Hannah, I have tried from a different browser and private browser but I am not given any other options. There is no dropdown menu. There is a red box in settings that says "Only the owner can change these settings. Settings apply to all folders in _______" (name of folder).

Hi,
Because I deleted the map for myself, I can’t reconstruct what I did 😞
To me it was very unexpected to find the option of deleting just for myself in “mapinstellingen” and not in a scroll down menu but just underneath other information.

Hi lindsaylindsay, sorry to jump in here!
Just to clarify, are these the steps you follow, in order to remove yourself from the folder?

I tried those steps, but when I get an error message saying, "We were unable to complete your request."
I've tried 4 times and get the same message every time. How do I remove myself from that folder? It's a 5GB file and my limit is 2GB so I'm not able to use my dropbox at all.

Hey TabH, thanks for posting here!
If I understand this correctly, it seems you're trying to remove a shared folder from your Dropbox account.
Have you tried using a different browser, or clearing the cache on your current one, to see if the results are the same?
If this is the case, then please send me a screenshot of the error you get on your end, in order for me to have a visual too.
Keep me posted, and we'll take it from there!

Hi,
I'm having the same problem but when I log into the website, the shared folder doesn't show on there. It's clearly in Dropbox on my laptop though. Do you have any advice please?
Kind regards
Amanda

Hey there, Amanda Lamb, thanks for posting here!
It's rather odd that you don't see the folder when you visit your account online.
Have you also checked your sharing page? Also, if you try to delete the folder from your desktop app directly, do you get any errors?
Let me know more!
