I want to know which of my friends viewed a shared file link posted to them at an earlier date.
I just upgraded to Dropbox Professional (perhaps in error?) because I read that with that version it would be possible to determine who (if any) on my email list might have viewed a shared file link ...

Was the link shared with specific people, meaning you invited them to view and/or edit a file, or was it just a view-only shared link that was setup so anyone with the link was able to view the file?
Viewer Information is for files that were shared with specific people, either by inviting them to a shared folder or to view and/or edit a file. If you created a shared link that was set up as "Anyone with this link can view" and then sent it to a group of people yourself, there's no way to know who viewed the file.
