​Previously, when I sent the link, the people who installed Dropbox claim they only installed the application on their phones, and I received the 500 MB.

Then something went wrong and you were lucky - the promotion has only EVER been that it was needed to be installed on to a computer. Mobile devices dont, and never ever have, counted towards the referral bonus.
