Shared Folder - Not Enough Space To Access Folder

So I just started paying for DropBox specifically to allow myself and some online friends to upload/share larger files with each other.

I've got 1.9TB free.

However, my friends are reporting they can't access the folder I share with them with an error "Not enough space to access the folder". But I've got 1.9TB free. Why wouldn't they be able to access it?

Can't work it out. There doesn't appear to be any limits on the folder I'm sharing with them.

You paid for an upgrade. They did not. Since the shared folder exists within their own account, they need to have enough space available in their own account to hold the folder and anything it contains.

Thanks for the reply Rich, appreciate the time.

I must say though, this design choice from DropBox makes no sense to me as I'm already paying to host the files. Why would my friend need more storage if they are reading/writing directly to my folder? Sounds mad that we'd have to pay for the same thing twice.

Either way, I guess I just have to accept this is just the way Dropbox works. Cancelled my account as doesn't provide the functionality I need.

Cheers for the speedy response 🙂

    Hi There,

In our school we have several classrooms. The school have one BIG space for all staff members and the company pays license for that space. Within our company's space we would like to grant for every classroom to have a dedicated space for each one.

Is this possible? Do we need to buy more licenses even when they are using the same company space?

Hi there mariposaccc - thanks for joining the discussion here.

When you say that the school has one big space for all staff members, are you referring to a Dropbox for teams account perhaps?

Also, are the classrooms you mentioned separate Dropbox accounts, members of the team account as well?

Yes. Because each account needs its own space and quota. Shared folders do not benefit others. Dont just use the 1 account and share it with everybody, its against the T&C's and could cause the data to be permanently deleted. Also, everybody who has that password is an 'owner' which could cause issues if somebody decided they wanted to delete it or something - at which its not recoverable.

Your best bet is to look at Dropbox for Business and ask about the Educational plans.
