Dropbox won't start or allow login after upgrading to Mac OS Sonoma.

Application Affected
Dropbox Mac Desktop

Device
Mac Studio

Operating System/Browser (if using the web)
Mac OS Sonoma 14.7.8
Dropbox App Version (if using the app)
205.4.5765

Question or Issue
Today I upgraded from Monterey (which was working perfectly) to Sonoma because an app I needed required the update. Now the Dropbox desktop app won't load.

  • I tried updating the app, but it still doesn't work.
  • I've rebooted the computer. Doesn't work.

If I click on it in the menu bar, it just says, "Starting...." and the animation keeps cycling.  It won't let me log in.

I've got literally TERABYTES of stuff on Dropbox and quite a few selective sync items, so the idea of having to completely delete and remanage this is just a nightmare.

Very frustrated.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, PH80.

Are you still having this issue? If so, I'd like to give you some context on how the app works in this case.

Since your computer's OS was updated, the app might have needed to perform a re-index of your files.

If you have other apps that also begin to run when your computer starts, they might compete with the Dropbox app, making the re-index take more time than expected.

If you have many and/or very large files, one way to help the app in this case is to reduce the number of files in your Dropbox folder with selective sync.

Let us know if that helps!

Hey PH80! I hope the issue has been resolved for you in the meantime.

In case it hasn’t though, please try out Hannah’s suggestions above and let me know how it goes.
