Isn't Dropbox Violating the CAN-SPAM Act with This Email?

This is a spam tactic trying to sell me storage.

The CAN-SPAM Act prohibits deceptive email practices, including misleading subject lines. If "RE:" falsely implies a prior conversation, it could be considered a violation.

Or warning you that your data is not secure if you believe its backing up to the cloud when it no longer is?

Or trying to save you the inconvenience of trying to find updated files on other devices and finding they are not syncing and you didn't know?

Of course you could also just disable the emails via the unsubscribe button or go to Notifications tab on the website: https://www.dropbox.com/account/notifications

Oh it is a warning, saving me from inconvenience... Those things could be true of most spam emails. That's actually a part of the formula. This is a deceptive heading used to increase sales rates. It is a known spam tactic.

Except it isnt unsolicited spam - as you are using the services of the company.

You have a choice: dont use the service/disable the notifications and dont get the emails or accept them in the supportive way they are intended.

So, does not seem to violate the law, does seem to be the same tactic. Why try to wool me with words like "supportive"? Spam tactic in plain sight. Very lowbrow and annoying.

    So disable them.

However, lots of people do find them helpful - in fact one of the most common complaints on here is people who haven't been getting these emails and didn't realise it wasn't syncing and so lost data when a HDD crashed or reformatted and didn't check what had/hadnt sync'd etc.

Dropbox should stop using spam tactics that users find offensive.

It's not a spam tactic. You're overreaching. And while RE: is used mostly to mean reply or response, it also means regarding or in regards to, and when used while starting a conversation it's the latter that is typically being conferred. In other words, the email is in regards to the following topic.

You're subscribed top a service and you're receiving a notification regarding the operating of that service as it pertains to your account. It's not spam.
