This is my experience with using Mac OS File Provider and Dropbox
I've been a Dropbox user for nearly 20 years. I'm writing this after days of troubleshooting, a brand new 24TB external drive I had to buy for $500, and a workflow that is still not fully restored.

The 300,000 file limit is primarily a soft limit, and can vary depending upon your hardware, however, above that amount, this would affect the performance of the Dropbox desktop application.
If you're running the legacy version of the Dropbox app, you should still be able to mark files and folders as available offline, by right clicking those folders and selecting that option.
The context menu items wouldn't be affected by the file limit, and should appear regardless of which version you're using. Do you have the Dropbox system extension enabled in your Finder settings?
