What is the authenticator?

I'm moving my dropbox account off a Mac and onto a linux machine. When I try and install dropbox, I get as far as entering my email/password and it asks me for the 6 digit code on the "authenticator"...

Hi davidsi,
Was your login issue solved afterall and how?
You see I am facing exactly the same problem with switching to a new Android phone.
I still cannot login.
I even raised a ticket https://www.dropbox.com/support/ticket/24423823
by sending an email to support dbox_.com.
I would appreciated it if you could help me.
