Do you see any files related to Dropbox on the external drive in the root folder?
Could you try unplugging and replugging the device, wait for it to be detected by the machine, and then open the Dropbox Backup settings?
Keep me updated with any progress!

Hey Jay,
Thanks for your reply. Yes; I have tried disconnecting and remounting the drive. Even rebooting my computer and reconnecting the drive ... No joy 😞
I know Dropbox Backup is in beta; how about the ability to select a drive from the menu? That would be a great fix.
