What would happen to my current account when it expired during that time? Would my files be safe?

Yes, your files would be safe. If you end up over your storage quota, syncing would stop but your existing files would remain in your account. You would have to be over your quota for an extended period of time (with multiple warning emails) before Dropbox started to remove files.

To add to what Rich said - make sure that you are receiving emails from Dropbox AND reading them (i.e. they arent in junk/clutter etc.) because if they DO remove files its permanent

My subscription has now expired and I am still having the same problem. Trying to upgrade in Dropbox desktop web version brings up the notification "Your plan and billing information are managed externally". Going to the Google play store account where I was seeing my subscription, it now just shows that it is expired and it gives me the button to "remove" it.

Hi Crystal Aurora, thanks for bringing this to our attention.
As this is related to sensitive billing info, I’d recommend getting in contact with our support team directly to look into this matter in more detail.
You can do this by opening an incognito/private browsing window, while not signed into any account, and accessing this link.
From there you should be able to contact support. Make sure to use an email to which you can receive and send emails from.
