Did you receive any kind of confirmation at your email address, the last time you cancelled your Dropbox subscription?
Other than that, I’d like to know if your Dropbox account was upgraded via Google Play/iTunes (instead of www.dropbox.com).
We’ll go from there.

It was so many years ago, I honestly can't remember. But I'd be willing to be I upgraded through Dropbox itself, not through Goodle Play or Itunes

I can only comment on iTunes but they message you a few weeks and days before telling you to cancel it.
However, if you contact iTunes (assuming its via Apple) you may get a refund direct.
You can then upgrade at http://www.dropbox.com/plan AFTER it downgrades.
