Dropbox is adding a folder to a thumb drive without asking

If I plug a thumb drive or turn on an external drive, Dropbox is adding a folder automatically without asking.  In my case it's a document folder.  I do not want this added.  There must be a setting ...

I do not have the backup enabled.

Yes, inside the documents folder is another document folder, inside is pdf favorites folder and inside that is another folder for outlook archives

    Is this a folder that is already on your computer elsewhere? 

    If you quit the Dropbox desktop application completely, and then connect the external drive, does the folder get created there?
