I found a shared folder on my mobile app that's not mine. Is my Dropbox account secure?
When I opened my Dropbox folder on my android phone (I only have the default folder on my app-a simple new installation) I saw a folder called Scuba. It wasn't mine. Dropbox indicated it was shared by two people I know but that I don't have any sharing relationships with. I'm worried that someone else has access to my Dropbox.
On my android phone I deleted the folder and uninstalled the entire Dropbox app.
When I open the folder on my Windows 11 PC the mystery folder is gone.
How is the appearance of the mystery folder possible? I only want to use Dropbox to move files between my phone and my PC. Are there settings to close it off to outside entities? If not, I'll uninstall the program from my PC, too.
Thanks,
Dave

Have you had a look at http://www.dropbox.com/events to see what it says about this folder?

No. BUT files and shares cannot appear in an account unless they are accepted by you. So any shares WILL NOT appear on your computer/mobile etc. from another user unless you physically accept the share.

Hi OneDave,
Thanks for letting us know! The fact that the folder belongs to people you know makes me think that this might not be an account breach.
It's likely they shared it with you in error (I'd advise asking them).
However, I would strongly recommend checking your Security Page.
You can check what browsers or devices have been linked to your account and when they last accessed it.

Hi Neal,
I tried to reply to your email with my email but the addressee was blocked. This is what I sent:
Thanks, Neal,
I looked at my account security page and didn’t see any devices or browsers other than my own. Is there another way to investigate how that shared folder got into my files without asking the other two people on the share?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Mark,
I tried to reply to your email but the addressee was blocked. This is what I tried to send:
Hi Mark,
Thanks for your suggestion. I found the Events list, which was quite short.
I only set up Dropbox in mid-May on my android phone and Windows PC. I wanted to move files between them. I’ve used it to capture the printable output file from a phone app so I can easily access it on my computer. That worked fine. I also dragged a couple jpg photo files into it from my phone and they came through onto my PC okay.
Other than those two activities, the only other events are listed below. Does anything look suspicious to you? I don’t recall ever joining “Scuba” explicitly. I just noticed it in my Dropbox. When I saw it, I clicked on it, which was probably the join action (I wasn’t asked), and that’s where I saw the two other people in the share. I then removed my access somehow and then deleted the whole folder. And removed the app from my phone.
Any ideas?
Dave
