Re: Excel file macros do not work in shared dropbox folder

Excel file macros do not work in shared dropbox folder

I have an excel spreadsheet on my desktop computer that uses macros in order to automatically sort my tenants. When i upload this spreadsheet into a shared file folder with my partners, the macros no longer work and the file is not automatically sorting. What is going on. Why does it disable macros?

Hi @aalter, thanks for reaching out to us here!

Do you have the file set to automatically run the macro when opening it?

Or are you able to run the macro once you open the file manually?

If you're getting any errors, please send along a screenshot of this.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Nothing is working. I would need a specialist to help me.

I do not know where to input the code to automatically run macros in the workbook.

Manually run macros gives me this error. See attached photoScreenshot 2020-12-04 130835.png

Thanks for your update here @aalter.

In this case, I wouldn't be able to help much further with this, so I would suggest reaching out to Microsoft Support for some assistance with this.

They will have a much better insight into this since it's within the Excel app that you need to take these actions.

I hope this helps to some extent, just let me know if you have any questions!

Hello everyone,

I have exactly the same issue here.

I have a Dropbox business sharing folders and files with another Dropbox business.
Both users open the excel files on a desktop (mine is an OSx, hers is a Windows PC).

The thing is: I created a file on excel with macros that works perfectly on both computers, but in hers, it just works if the file is saved and opened from OUTSIDE the dropbox shared folder.

When the excel file with macros opens on her computer from the dropbox shared folder, it does not even ask to able or disable macros. It acts like there are no macros at all.

Can someone please help me?

Thank you

I need to run the macros I chose dropbox and shared .xlsm file with one user but we are not able to take action or run the macros using dropbox. I chose to open file using excel for web but same ..

Actulally after filing information upon clicking button or image the macro runs also upon right click of mouse the macro runs but it's not happening online using dropbox share.

I need this to work essentially as this is team work for us.

I created an important document for my Dropbox for Business team which extensively uses macros and is thus an .xlsm file. However, none of the macro features are necessary when the team uses the file online. Their sole purpose is to harness Visual Basic to rapidly produce external content in Word. The intent is for users to occasionally download the newest online version of the file, generate the local content they need using the desktop-exclusive macros, then delete or ignore the file and return to online use. The spreadsheet, however, is still an important resource for the team to use online without macros. In particular, the team prefers access to the Filter View system which is only available in Google Sheets.

When I uploaded the .xlsm file to Dropbox, I was disappointed to realize that it would no longer open in GSheets; only Excel Online, which does not support Filter Views. Obviously it supports general filters, but those are neither (1) usable by only 1 person at a time without affecting all other users viewing the sheet, like Filter Views, nor (2) able to be saved to the sheet for use later, like Filter Views. This does not make much sense to me because I can open the same macro-enabled file in my personal Google Sheets without issue. Is there anything that can be done to enable my team to work on this file in DB online, ignoring the macros entirely as intended? Thanks!

Hey @yggdrasilsyeoman, sorry to hear you're having issues with this.

I'm not sure if this would help, but have you considered converting the file to another format, a .xlsx file for example?

This would enable you to open and edit the files with Google Sheets

I have the same problem.

if you have it  as a xls file The macros doesn’t work. It needs to stay in a xslm file.
Do you have a solution or are you looking at this . Really need macros to work on this platform to make it perfect for my business
