How can I delete sensitive information from a shared folder I don't own?

How can I delete sensitive information from a shared folder I don't own?

Hi

When I was working with another person due to some business requirements, the other person created a shared directory and asked me to upload some of my personal information (like IDs, Paystubs, ...). I did that and now I'm regretting to share those information.

I want to delete all my personal data from that directory from Dropbox. I could delete those data but since the other person is the admin of that shared directory, I think they can recover that data. This is stressing me out! I don't want to share all the info regarding this on a public forum, and tried to find a Dropbox Security phone number to talk to, but I couldn't find one. This has caused me a lot of harm so far.

How can I proceed? What can I do? Is there any process?

As it is in a shared folder you may not be able to do so, however, you can have a look at the section on Permanent Deletion here (https://help.dropbox.com/files-folders/restore-delete/delete-files) and try that.

There was a zip file and an extracted directory from that zip file. I could permanently delete the zip file (I think because I uploaded that) but I couldn't permanently delete the extracted files (probably because the other person extracted it, so I'm not the owner of that although the files are coming from my zip file).

These are really sensitive personal documents, do you know how can I talk to someone from Security team at Dropbox? This is affecting my life a lot.

Hey @sam2022, sorry to hear about that!

Can you check by any chance if you're the owner of said folder?

Also, do you get any errors when trying to delete the content?

Hi @Megan.

I deleted (not permanently deleted) the directory. How can I find who is the directory owner? Trying to permanently deleting the directory after couple of seconds, a modal pops up with this information:

1 item couldn’t be permanently deleted. What can you do. Ask the owner to help permanently delete this

@sam2022 - usually its the owner is the person who initially uploaded them, so, that would be the person who unzipped I'd imagine.
