Dropbox prompts me to upgrade, in order to add a shared folder to my account

Every time someone shares a file with me, dropbox tells me I need to upgrade. That means dropbox is billing two users for the same file. The user who shared the file obviously has enough space in their account to have uploaded the file. Therefore why should the second user also need to use storage on their account? Stop billing two users for the same file. It’s absurd.

Dropbox is not double billing. They're billing each user for the space they use. Since the files from a shared folder exist in your account, you need to have enough space in your account to hold those files.
