Dropbox doesn't work on new computer

Dropbox doesn't work on new computer

wleman2021

I can't get Dropbox to work on my new computer. I can't get past this error message:

"Couldn't start Dropbox.

This is usually because of a permissions error."

I have read many messages about this issue on this support forum and elsewhere on the Internet. I have tried solutions that have worked for others, including:

1. Uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox many times, including with antivirus off

2. Deleted local Dropbox folder

3. Deleted all occurrence of "Dropbox" in the registry

4. Changed my Windows password

My computer is a new Windows 10 that works great except for Dropbox. I have used Dropbox on other computers for many years. I have my important work data stored in Dropbox so I need that data to be stored locally and to sync between my devices (I have them narrowed down to less than 3.)

Please help me fix this problem.

Following is the info I was told by a Dropbox message to access:

Hey @wleman2021, thanks for joining our Community!

Can you please try reinstalling the Dropbox application using the offline installer, to see if that works?

Let me know how you go!

Thank you for responding, Hannah. I had already tried the offline installer. I got an error message that it was an older version of Dropbox which could not be used on my computer.

Hi @wleman2021,

Maybe you have changed something on you computer, leading to restricted access to your application settings. (accessing throughout another local account, changing your user id, etc)

Try forcibly relink your application using following steps:

  • Open you File browser (Windows Explorer, for example).
  • Type %LOCALAPPDATA% into the address bar and press enter. (together with surrounding percent signs)
  • In the list coming up, find out Dropbox folder (not the place where you keep your data! it's different) and wipe it out. You may need use additional authentication (administrator password).
  • Run your Dropbox application and link it back to your account.

Hope this helps.

PS: %LOCALAPPDATA% in your case will be C:\Users\wleman\AppData\Local 😉
