How to revert an incorrect SOCKS5 proxy setting?

How to revert an incorrect SOCKS5 proxy setting?

I am running Dropbox on Macbook Catalina. By mistake I used a wrong IP address for SOCKS5 proxy and now the app is hosed. It just keep spinning and does not allow me to open preference to fix the wrong SOCKS5 IP (see the attached screenshot)Screen Shot 2021-06-10 at 11.21.59 AM.png.

Looks like a serious bug. Will appreciate any tip on how to revert it via the terminal. I see a bunch of ".db" files, but not sure which one to restore from my backup:

ls -C1 .dropbox/instance1/
aggregation.dbx
avatarcache.db
browse_cache.db
config.dbx
contacts_polaris.db
dropbox.pid
folder_preferences.db
home.db
hostkeys
icon.db
icon_cache
l
onboarding.db
photo.dbx
preview_cache.db
sync
sync_history.db
unlink.db

Well, finally had to use the hammer approach 🙂

Just get rid of the corrupted .dropbox directory.

$ cd $HOME

$ mv .dropbox delete_me_later_I_am_no_longer_good

And relaunch Dropbox.app and re-sign-in. That's all.

Hi @jsh1234, thanks for reaching out to our Community!

Have you tried rebooting your computer, to see if that helps?

Let me know!

Hi Hannah,

Yes I did try rebooting and it didn't help. The problem seems to be the Dropbox app trying to use a bad SOCKS5 proxy --which doesn't work-- and it is stuck in a loop trying to use it. I am unable to revert this bad configuration because the settings/preferences page won't open due to this bad configuration --kind of chicken and egg problem 😞 I can use a terminal (via command-line) to fix it if you can tell me which file to fix and how.

Thanks,

jsh1234

Hello, jsh1234! If you tried to run the backup feature on your IOS system (go to system>backup>backup points in order to proceed with the backup)? I think it can help with backing the settings before the mistake you made. Also, if you don't have the proper backup point, I suggest you reinstall the application or delete the server folder in the mods folder. This issue happened with my other VPS application when I was trying to set up my own VPS server europe. I hope my pieces of advice will help you with solving your problem.
