Device (Dell XPS 15, iPhone 13, etc.) Operating System/Browser (if using the web) (Windows 11, macOS14.3, etc.) Dropbox App Version/Browser Version (Chrome 124, Safari 17 etc.) Question or Issue While trying to restore, or in Dropbox's parlance, "Download" an existing backup of a laptop being replaced by a new laptop, I received the error message shown in the title. No further explanation given. I searched for the error in the Help Files and found... NOTHING! I searched here in the Community and found a thread right away from two years ago that described receiving the same error message. One reply was marked as a solution, and although it may have helped with the OP, pointing him to a Help File article on backups, it did not help me decipher the error message or how to work around it. In fact, the article stated that after signing in to Dropbox on the new computer and downloading and installing the app, that I should have been prompted to automatically restore the backup from the original laptop. That did not happen. I can't even imaging how it could happen since the software wouldn't know which device that had been backed up the new device was replacing. This was very discouraging to me in that not only finding out other people had experienced the same issue, but it wasn't acknowledged in Dropbox's Help Files, and replies had been turned off in the thread, despite the lack of a real solution. My fear is that, despite its hefty fees for services, Dropbox backup and restore may not be really ready for prime time. It's pretty obvious that restoring to a downloaded zip file is not a true restore and involves a lot of extra work by the user, even assuming the backed up data is intact. My guess is that Dropbox doesn't have a true restore function, and that also, it has a limitation on the number of files that can even be downloaded in a zip file. Anyone else experienced this error message and actually found a solution?25Views0likes1CommentUsers downloading a file from a dl=0&raw=1 shared link get a 0 bytes download

Hi, I had a Dropbox subscription that didn’t suit my needs, and I eventually stopped using the service. I forgot about it until I received a notice that my files would be deleted because my account is over the free plan limit. That part is understandable. However, I’m having trouble downloading my materials. Some files are over 150 GB, and the app has been giving me issues. I managed to manually download some files through my browser, but now I’ve received an email saying that my traffic exceeded the 20 GB daily limit. Since my files are much larger than that, I’m stuck. What can I do? How can I contact someone at Dropbox to help me download my files so I can then delete my account? Thanks in advance.89Views0likes11CommentsNew Dropbox desktop update is re-syncing everything.
This new update has messed how my Dropbox works on Desktop too. I also get the 'syncing' symbol on all of my folders, and for some reason Dropbox has decided that it needs to Sync all ~80,000 files all over again despite the fact that I already had everything set up perfectly how I like it and all the files that I needed for offline/online use were already set. It's taken about 2.5 hours out of my work day so far because it's clogging up all my time trying to get this mess sorted.564Views5likes18CommentsDropbox 237.4.5655 - syncing hangs on 30 files forever or '"waiting for download".
Device PC Operating System/Browser (if using the web) Windows 11 Dropbox App Version (if using the app) 237.4.5655 Syncing Status Syncing 30 files Question or Issue This weekend on all my pc's and laptops (all Windows11) the new dropbox update was installed automatically. On my working laptop, this went as a charme, no problem. My backup laptop started to index all files, then syncing and now it stays on "Werkruimte downloaden" (workspace?) - after a reboot, he starts syncing and then it goes to above and stays there. No progress. All files are synced, but Dropbox keeps on "busy". My PC started to index first all files (more than 300k of number of files), then syncing, from 16 hours to 6-8 hours at least. Then it showed, that there were 2 files left to sync, 412KB , so this would be in a blink of an eye. It stayed there forever. Then i tried: clearing cache, unlink/link again and wait again for 6-8 hours. I also tried to deselect the files for syncing, but no solution there. Now it states it still wants to download/sync 30 files.... (waiting for download) and stays there. So one out-of-three the update went smooth, but the other two are still trying to get the syncing finished. Any ideas how to move forward on this update? Kind regards, Jeroen120Views0likes9CommentsNewest Dropbox update automatically setting files to online-only on Windows.
Why are my files now being automatically set to online only with the newest update? This is the most idiotic thing Dropbox has done yet. I don't care if there is a new interface on my desktop. I do care if now all the files I thought were actually on my HD are now gone. Thanks for wasting my bandwidth as I re-download countless GB of data I want on my HD. I use Dropbox as one of my backup sites, and very occassionally for synching. I don't care if Windows now has a feature that does what Dropbox does. I use Dropbox because it is independent of my operating system. The more Dropbox attempts to emulate Windows, the less useful it is to me. I've used Dropbox for over a decade, and now I'm going to look for somewhere else on the cloud to backup my data (in addition to my spare HD). I don't know if I'll find it, but wish me luck because Dropbox is less and less useful every year, and now it actively makes my life more difficult.188Views0likes5CommentsCan't download my files anymore. It would be a nice feature to have to be able to clip webpages, articles and notes to a designated folder in my dropbox account. Evernote is a good clipping tool, but its storage and recall functions are limited. It would be nice to clip a whole web page, with images, as well as a just the basics, even if it is a text file.127Views0likes1CommentDownloading from the web kicks me off Wi-Fi and I have issues moving files
Whenever I try to download through my Windows 11 set-up, the download fails and I get kicked off my internet connection. I've seen a number of people complain about this - on here and on Reddit - and the solution appears to involve turning off virus protection, but that clearly isn't a viable or sensible solution. Dropbox needs to figure out what's going wrong and fix it. As it stands, the platform is no longer viable for me and the company I work for. If a proper solution isn't found soon, we will be moving our business elsewhere. To make matters worse, there's the problem of moving files. I used to be able to click Move, then click Create new folder, navigate back, Click Move again, the new folder would come up and I could click on it. Job done. Now, Create new folder is greyed out and I have to go through a ridiculous number of steps to create the new folder and move the file. The obvious folders aren't offered as defaults and it's just a total faff. Dropbox used to be very efficient and easy to use. Now it's effectively useless. The only way that I can actually use it is by doing everything via a Mac to carry out the downloads then email the files to my PC - obviously not a viable solution in the long term. As I said, if Dropbox can't find a solution to these issues, we'll be moving our business elsewhere.152Views0likes7Comments
