Dropbox Backup
278 TopicsDropbox keeps on trying to upload 'dbx.external.drive' on MacOS 15.6
Hi. I've tried to clear out all of my backups from Dropbox. I was previously backing up two external drives, but I don't want to do that anymore. So I've deleted the drives from the Backup Manager page, no problem. But when I hit 'Sync' on my Dropbox app, it's creating a file under .dropbox/logs/1 that fills with small files until my entire hard drive is full. I went in and deleted all of these files once (144GB!), which didn't seem to affect functionality of anything, then it immediately went to fill it back up again. The only file it says "Syncing" in the app is dbx.external.drive. I'm on a Dropbox Professional Plan, using a Mac Studio running 15.6 Sequoia. Question or Issue I have a lot of data on Dropbox related to my research. I would like to keep a back up somewhere other than Dropbox. All recommendations on the internet suggest that I make the folder available offline (i.e. save it to local drive) and then back it up to external drive. Unfortunately, my computer's hard drive is now too small. Is there any solution other than downloading in batches? It is very tedious to do this one folder at a time, especially if I want to back up regularly. I looked into possibly syncing Drobox directly with a large external drive but I see on forums that is not recommended because if the external drive gets disconnected for some reason, Dropbox can interpret that as files being deleted on the local drive and in the next sync delete everything on the cloud. That is a risk I cannot take.Solved149Views0likes5CommentsBackup external hard drive on multiple computers
I just started using Backup with my external HDD which has 3+ terabytes on it. I started the process on my main computer but since this is going to take a long time (I canât keep my hard drive plugged into it all day) I thought about plugging the hard drive into my other computer, which also had Dropbox on it, and continue the upload there. Is this possible?? When Iâm on the other computer (not the one I started the external drive backup with) it doesnât show the external drive, but it does show the other computer. Would be very nice if the drive could be backed up/resumed on a separate computer under the same account. Another question: what happens when the external drive breaks and I need to recover all 3+ terabytes to f data? Does Dropbox have a function that lets you download that amount somehow?1.2KViews0likes6CommentsI plugged an external drive to my computer, but it's backing up 0% to Dropbox
I've recently signed up with Dropbox Backup and added my external hard drive. I enabled backup for this drive, and selected 'Backup Now' rather than waiting for it to schedule a backup at 9am tomorrow morning. Since doing so the drive remains at 90-100% usage, but not a single file has been uploaded in over 4 hours. It shows 0 bytes transferred in the Dropbox app. How do I get it to do it's job and actually start the backup?1.2KViews1like14CommentsDropbox external drive backup stuck at backing up 1.64GB of 14TB

It's showing as Done and 1.64GB in size. Looks stuck under "Updating ### files.." it's been in the 800 range for days. Network Stats shows no upload happening. Expected behavior: uploading 9GB of my 14tb drive.169Views0likes9CommentsIs Dropbox Backup working normally on my machine?
Hello, I transferred my folders and files to my Dropbox backup, primarily using the Dropbox application on my PC. My Dropbox backup contains the following folders: Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, Music, Videos, Giro Film 1, Giro Film 2, Documents, Screenshots, and Camera Upload. All of these folders have a cloud in the Status column. My PC has the same folders with a cloud in the Status column, except for the following folders: Videos, Giro Film 1, Giro Film 2, and Documents. Is this normal? Does this mean these four folders aren't syncing? What exactly should I do?69Views0likes3CommentsBacking up an NTSF drive attached to a Mac
I recently retired a Windows 10 machine that had a 12 TB NTSF drive of pictures, videos, and music attached that is 75% full. That drive was backed up to Dropbox on the Windows machine. I bought NTFS for Mac from Paragon so that the drive is writable on my Mac, and it works like a dream. Except where Dropbox is concerned. This NTFS drive was also my Dropbox drive on the old machine. I would rather not have to buy a new drive, format it for APFS or HFS+ and then manually copy everything from the old drive to the new drive. But it looks like if I want it to backup on my Mac, that is my only choice? (except format the existing drive and hope everything from Dropbox will be put back -- but that will take almost a week!) If I try and set the old Dropbox folder on that read/writeable NTFS drive on my Mac as my Dropbox folder, I get an error telling me that the format is not supported. Really? You support those kinds of files from a Windows machine, so I know they can be stored on Dropbox. So why can't you support the same file types on my Mac? It is just a file, and it is readable and writable on that drive. I belive this is a serious oversight by Dropbox software. Since all you backup is a file anyway, just backup the file! And I know you can backup an NTFS file on a Windows machine and then sync it to a Mac, and the reverse method works as well. So why shouldn't this just work! This is obviously a software limitation that seems unnecessary to me. Anyway have a workaround for this issue? I guess I could install VPC on the Mac, and then switch operating systems when I want that drive backed up, but kind of defeats the purpose of Dropbox always keeping gone backed up, and switch the OS is a pain in the &**( and takes a long time. Dropbox: How hard would it be to set NTFS files and legal files to sync on the Mac? This might be a time I stop using Dropbox and go to Cloudflare or some other cloud backup that knows how to support multiple file systems on a Mac. Disappointed by what is otherwise excellent software.Solved3.3KViews1like6CommentsMacOS - Desktop folder is an alias to a subfolder of Dropbox after using a migration tool.
I am an MSP, and I have an issue with a user that has a Mac and the initial issue this morning was that he could not access his Desktop. The scenario: M2 Macbook Pro - MacOS 15.5. This machine was originally set up by using the MacOS Migration tool from his previous Mac (this was done a couple years ago). This morning he could not access his Desktop, stating that he did not have permissions to the Desktop. I determined that Desktop was an alias to /Users/<user>/Documents/Dropbox/<previous Macbook name/Desktop. In that folder I found the permissions for his user was set to Custom. I changed it to Read & Write, and he was able to access his Desktop & files again In discussion with the user, he confirmed that Dropbox Backup had been used to backup his Desktop, but that was enabled on his previous Mac (which is no longer accessible), not the current one. Note that it does not seem that any other folders (Documents, Downloads, etc.) were enabled for backup, only the Desktop. Accessing Dropbox Backup...Settings, the only device defined is the previous machine. And the message there states: To manage these settings, sign in on the same computer you used to start this backup. The previous machine is no longer accessible. So if we want to get the files moved from the ../Dropbox...Desktops folder back to the original /Users/<user>/Desktop folder, how can this be done? Thanks LThibx149Views0likes5Comments
