Hi there! I'm setting up a new system and I'm trying to keep the internal hard-drive clean, with lots of free space by using an external drive for my Dropbox and other data. I'm keeping the internal drive for the OS and application data only. The external drive is a fast, encrypted SSD and meets all the requirements to use "Dropbox on File Provider". My question is: Does Dropbox still store information or data of some kind in the form of "system data" on the system drive or within the Dropbox application folder, despite specifying the external drive for my Dropbox folder and files? Most of my files are online-only and on the external drive, but I am still seeing the system data increasing, thereby reducing the amount of space I have on my internal drive. It's not ideal. I've already attempted to restart to see if that gives me back some disk space on my internal drive, but no luck. Please let me know what Dropbox is doing that it takes up System Data on internal drive even when that's not even where the Dropbox folder is installed. I'm afraid to sync my entire folder out of fear of what it will do to my internal disk space. Please help! Thank you.28Views0likes4CommentsDropbox system data is taking up a large amount of space from my computer, after installing the app.
We've had a Dropbox account for years, but I hadn't installed it on my MacBook Air because I was afraid that it would take up too much space. Since we're having trouble with OneDrive, we decided to use Dropbox and I installed it and then made all of my files online only. However, now more than 100GB of my 256GB drive is full with system data, most of which wasn't there before. Is there something that Dropbox leaves behind when copying files from OneDrive to Dropbox? Is there anything I can do about it?Solved133Views0likes5CommentsI've made a folder online-only, but it's still taking up several GBs on my Mac computer.
I have a folder named > Books which takes up a total 60.95 GB But I noticed that on my Mac (macOS Sequoia 15.3.1) the folder is listed as taking up 21.34 GB (25.81 GB on disk). Questions: 1. I think its odd that "size on disk" is even larger than "size"—any idea why? 2. More importantly: why is this folder taking up 25.81 GB on disk when I've commanded the folder to be online-only using the Make online-only command? (yes, I've restarted) I understand that your support document (https://help.dropbox.com/delete-restore/cache-folder) recommends deleting the hidden cache folder named .dropbox.cache, but I don't seem to have that. Instead I simply have .dropbox. Is this the same thing? I assume not, doesn't look like a hidden folder, I don't want to delete something I shouldn't be.Solved237Views0likes7CommentsFinding all offline folders
hi I did a search although couldn't find this questions being asked. Sorry If I missed it! I'm travelling and want to try and make some free space on my Macbook. Is there a way I can find all the files taking up space from Dropbox, so I can set them to make available online only? I have cleared some space already, although some of the folders have folders nested within them so could take a fair amount of time to trawl through manually. Thanks for reading!Solved1.4KViews0likes4CommentsAccount erroneously locked because of "full storage"
My personal account has been locked for several months because Dropbox is claiming the storage is full. Their error is that I had a work account I was a team member of that was closed and deleted. So somehow they attribute those files which no longer exist as being my files. They're claiming I have something like 45GB on my Dropbox & I have less than 1 GB. I have paid for a Dropbox plan in the past but do not currently need to share a large volume of files but I anticipate that I will need to again soon. With errors like this and no easy resolution I am not exactly inclined to upgrade again. Any assistance? Thanks!28Views0likes5CommentsMac Finder continues to show large size of Dropbox Folder despite everything being online-only
Hi, everyone. Thanks in advance for your help, wisdom, and support. I have a problem several others have experienced, but none of the solutions I found here seem to be working. Simply put, I have around 300 GB in my Dropbox folder and have everything set to be online only (or so I assume?) Mac finder is still showing this 300 GB as being used, and it is affecting other uses that require a lot of space (video editing, audio sample packages, etc.) I do need that space back. "Space Lens" in CleanMyMac shows the proper amount of space used ( a bit under 500 GB of my 1TB built-in drive on my MacBook Pro M1. Here are the specs: Macbook Pro M1; 16GB RAM; 1Tb drive OS: Sonoma 14.5 Dropbox Desktop Version: 204.4.5420 I have searched the Dropbox folder for the ".dropbox.cache" file, but it does not exist. Here is a screenshot of the only files that appear after invoking "shift-command-.": Here is a screenshot (blurred for privacy concerns) of what the folder's directory looks like. Unless I'm mistaken, shouldn't all of these files be online only?: The Dropbox directory resides in the "Cloudstorage" in the Library, which is precisely where I believe it should be. Any help or insight the community can offer would be tremendously appreciated. Many thanks in advance! I am considering getting a new Mac Mini M4 with a smallish root disk. It is possible to put ones home directory on an external disk. This will allow me to place large space hogs like Photos and Music onto cheaper space. However, will the other space hog, Dropbox be there or will the $HOME/CloudStorage/Dropbox directory still be on /?29Views0likes1CommentDropbox folder on Mac is larger than it appears, why?
Hi I'm quite new to this, so likely being a bit daft, but......... I'm trying to manage storage space on my Mac to enable dropbox to sync. I'm currently seeing a dropbox error message..."Your hard drive space is low - Dropbox can't sync until you free some disc space on your computer" There is a discrepancy between the dropbox folder size 155Gb and it's contents 38Gb. ThanksSolved53Views0likes6CommentsLocal hard drive size does not change after moving 160Gb folders online only
Macbook Pro 16" M4 Max 64Gb/4Tb, Mac OS Sequoia 15.1 I have made 160Gb total size folders online only to free up disk space, Dropbox sync shows "your files are up to date", folder sizes have instantly gone down to zero or close to zero on Mac finder but total disk space has not changed a bit. Any idea? I must say I've had quite many syncing problems with the Dropbox lately and am a bit concerned about its reliability.80Views0likes12Comments
