Re: "Open in Finder" and "Open in Word" not showing in Safari OSX for Mac
As the subject says, the 'open in finder' option is not available when opening links in Safari -which is my standard browser-. I have the desktop app active, it's up-to-date and it's syncing. When opening links in Chrome, it does work.
I'm on MacOS Catalina 10.15, Safari Version 13.0.2 (15608.2.30.1.1) and Dropbox Version 84.4.170 (84.4.170).
Do I have to change a setting to get it to work or is it simply not available on Safari?
Thanks in advance.

Hello there WildfireQueen, hope you're doing well today!
For this option to be available, you're browser needs to updated to the latest version but it also requires Flash Player 10 or later to be enabled on the browser too. Is it possible that you don't have this installed on the Safari?
Also, you mentioned opening links, can you let me know if these are shared links to files that are within your Dropbox account? If so, any screenshots you can provide of this difference within Chrome and Safari would be much appreciated.
Let me know what you find - thanks!

Thanks! I've done the following things, but still I don't have the option of 'open in finder'.
For this option to be available, you're browser needs to updated to the latest version
Just updated to Catalina v10.15.1 and now my Safari is up to date as well (v13.0.3).
but it also requires Flash Player 10 or later to be enabled on the browser too. Is it possible that you don't have this installed on the Safari?
I didn't have it installed when you asked, but prior to updating I've installed the latest Flash Player (NPAPI-plug-in version 32.0.0.270). I've enabled it for the dropbox website (by default it's switched off) and restarted safari. I've checked again after the OS update and restart and it's still enabled for dropbox.com.
Also, you mentioned opening links, can you let me know if these are shared links to files that are within your Dropbox account?
Yes they are: I'm logged on to my dropbox account from work (both in browser and in finder). I do have selective sync, but the (.PNG) file in question is synced locally to my computer as well. The links are generated by right clicking a file and selecting 'copy link'.
If so, any screenshots you can provide of this difference within Chrome and Safari would be much appreciated.
Here they are:

I'm having the same problem as well. Can you please let me know when a solution is found?

Hi there, It looks like you have exactly the same issue that I do. I've had our tech people look at this issue and they are able to reproduce the issue on other machines and accounts so I know it's not just my settings.
I've been patient and have raised this issue with Dropbox Support. After some rudimentary troubleshooting they seem to have dismissed this issue as an issue with third-party software rather than with dropbox itself.
This seems very unlikely given the widespread issues that others are having and the fact that this can be reproduced on other machies by different users both within and outside our organisation. I've always been a Dropbox Fanboy but just lately I'm a lot less positive...
All the best for a resolution. Let me know if you solve it.
Cheers,
Scott
Hi Scott,
My name is Isaac from Advanced Support.
The problem you’re experiencing appears to be caused by another app or service you’re using, not by Dropbox. We’re unable to provide support for third-party apps or services.
Since it was Safari's latest update that caused this issue, we cannot apply any steps outside of the steps provided here and on the forums.
Have you tried making sure your operating systems are fully updated and aren't missing any updates that would solve this issue?
The best way for you to get assistance with the problem is to reach out to the company that makes the app or service for support. Try the Apple forums.
The Dropbox Community is a forum where people can post questions and get answers from other community members. Answers in the DropboxCommunity include how to use Dropbox alongside other products and services.
An additional note on this: the Open button will only appear for files already synced with your computer's local Dropbox folder. If another user shares a link to a file with you, you won’t see the Open button as this file will not be in your Dropbox yet. In order to use the Open button, you’ll need to add this file to your Dropbox and let it sync via the desktop client. ( once the app states " Up to date" you should be fully synced and ready to go)
Thank you for relaying the issue to us.
Have a great day and thank you for using Dropbox.
Regards,
Isaac - Scott H.7 years agoCollaborator | Level 9
Hi redegg
Sadly there's still no solution to this despite the issue being raised back in September. Whern I raised this issue with Dropbox Advanced Support they dismissed the issue as a third-party software issue... (I am confident that this isn't the case).
Our whole organisation is affected by this and it seems that others outside of our organisation who use safari as their browser of choice are also affected.
It's a very dissapointing usder-expoerience considering the significant amount of money I pay for a Dropbox Professional Subscription.
All the best for a solution. Let me know if you find one...

Hey peeps, thanks for all your updates here!
I'd just like to ask, redegg and tsigel, do you both have Flash Player 10 or later installed and enabled on the Safari browser?
If you open Dropbox in an incognito/private window, do you still have the same issue?
Let me know and we'll take it from there - thanks!

Is there any solution to this? There is nothing on these forums other than installing/reinstalling dropbox or flash, none of which resolves the problem.
- Scott H.7 years agoCollaborator | Level 9
Hi up12345 ,
I'm sorry to report that there's still no solution to this. It's pretty annoying.
Let me know if you find a way to solve this.
Warm regards,
Scott

thanks Scott H. what is not clear to me is whether this is unique to a few people or whether everyone on safari experiences this problem - any idea if its a general problem?

Hi up12345
Everyone that I know who has a mac using safari as their default broswer seems to have this problem.
- WildfireQueen7 years agoHelpful | Level 7
Yes I agree: my colleagues using Safari have the issue as well. But I've been emailing with Dropbox support and providing info, so hopefully it will be fixed soon!

Just want to pipe up that I have this problem too. I would appreciate it if Dropbox staff make sure to post a response here once it's resolved. Thanks for keeping everyone updated Scott H.

I'm having this same issue despite lots of troubleshooting as well.
- Scott H.7 years agoCollaborator | Level 9
Hi kmanlove ,
Sorry to hear that you are also having trouble. My issue still persists and has done for several months now. It is very frustrating that Dropbox don't seem able (willing?) to fix this as it is clearly an issue for many of us.
Let me kow if you find a fix.
Cheers.

My issue persists as well. They have suggested that I use the Dropbox app but that doesn't help for me and my team - we often share URL links and they open in Safari, but we then can't look at the file in Finder or open in the native app. They update me every week or two to tell me they are still looking into it :(
