Explorer preview is failing when using subst on Dropbox desktop app.
The latest update has caused explorer preview handlers to fail for multiple filetypes including all images and solidworks cad files.
The files will preview fine if they are selected using the raw dropbox file path.
E:\Dropbox\some folder\some file.jpg
If the file is accessed using a subst file mapping then the preview is left blank
subst R: "E:\Dropbox\some folder"
R:\some file.jpg
If the file is outside dropbox and mapped using subst the preview works fine.

Hi Hillaero! Welcome back to the Community.
When referring to the latest update, do you mean the Dropbox for Windows update perhaps?
To have a clear image of the issue, do you mind sending over a couple of screenshots showing what you’re describing?
Other than that, I’d like to know your OS version, plus the syncing status and app version of your Dropbox app.
Give me a nudge, once you’re ready.

Yes, that is the windows update, we are on version 228.4.5567 on windows 10 22h2. I see we can opt out of this update, for how long will that be an option though...
Raw path works fine
After subst cmd, no preview
There have been a couple other bugs encountered:
- Been having trouble with constantly syncing .txt and .php files that are being served by a webserver.
- the "default sync state for new files" setting keeps reverting back to online-only each time the sync tab is navigated to. No obvious way to save setting.

I found something interesting.
- Close dropbox client
- click on image (does not work)
- copy and paste image
- new image works old image does not work
- start dropbox client and allow to sync
- new image no longer works
Seems the act of syncing is killing file preview
FYI i did a delete of .dropbox.cache to do a reindex.

Thanks for the extra info you’ve shared, Hillaero! About the syncing issue that you mentioned, how is it progressing? I’m asking because, when the app isn’t up to date, this can create inconsistencies when it comes to previewing your Dropbox files.
Can you clarify what’s the current syncing status of the Dropbox app, and if it has changed at all since the last time you posted?

After doing a reindex dropbox is fully synced and says "up to date". The symptoms from my previous post are consistent across all our computers.

Hi Hillaero, could you try quitting the Dropbox desktop application entirely, and then try accessing the files using the link you created?
Are the files you're trying to access marked as available offline according to the sync icon?

It is like the Dropbox update is conflicting with how Windows handles virtual drives hehe . I’ve seen similar issues before might be worth testing with a instead of to see if previews return.
