How can I open a shared link from the site in Finder?
My Workflow:
I often receive Dropbox links from my team through various channels — Slack, email, AirDrop, Notion, etc.To review the files, I need to open them in specific apps, since the file types don’t support previews on the web.
…And that’s where things get tricky.
Current Situation with Dropbox:
When using the Dropbox website on macOS with Safari, I don’t get an option to open the file in Finder. My current workaround is to try to locate where the file sits in our folder hierarchy and then search for it manually in Finder… which is such a pain.
What I’m Hoping For:
Instead of flooding us with Formula 1 ads and promoting Dash (which isn’t even available to me), I wish Dropbox would focus on supporting simple workflows like this:
Receive a link → Open the file in my default app for that file type.
- No, I don’t want to go to the web app, download the file, and risk creating duplicates that break the single source of truth.
- No, I don’t want to memorize file paths 10 times a day.
- And no, I shouldn’t have to dig into port settings or run terminal commands to make this work.
Am I missing something? How are other teams dealing with this?
Thanks!

Sorry Jay, I hadn’t seen your reply and then I bumped onto the same problem again and remembered this post 😅
to answer your question :
yes those links all originate from the same folder hierarchy within our team that we share. So the path to the file in their finder is the same as mine except for the user name.
hope that helps ! - Jay5 months ago

Hi tanguyap, thanks for contacting us!
Just for clarification, for these shared links you received from your team, are the same files also visible in your Dropbox account from the site?
Are those files also in the same file structure as those from your colleagues?
This will help me to assist further!
