Desktop app opens Finder; usual remedies not working

I'm on a Mac Apple M2 Pro running Sequoia 15.6.1. I used to have a Dropbox icon in my menu bar from which I could access my files and see notifications. Now when I launch the app, it opens in a finder window. The menu icon is missing and the Desktop app doesn't open. I have redownloaded Dropbox and restarted, but this didn't fix the issue.

Advice appreciated!

  • This was resolved through a help chat. I needed to remove menu items from my menu bar until I could see the Dropbox menu icon. I then moved the icon to the right so it's more likely to stay visible.

Hi charlie22, thanks for messaging the Community!

We appreciate your response on your your resolved this matter.

On Mac OS in particular on newer versions of the OS, if the menu bar has many items then other items would vanish and be hidden.

Hello! I have a new MacBook Air M2, 2022 running Tahoe 26.0.1 (just installed).  I downloaded Dropbox app but am having the same problems as the OP:  Dropbox "app" only opens Finder and there is no icon in the menu bar.  I do not have many items in the menu, so there is plenty of room for another icon.  However,  Dropbox won't open an "app" nor show in the menu bar, so there are no preferences or settings.  Please help?  Thanks much.

Hey JLeonardATL - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.

Did you try rebooting your computer and/or reinstalling the app at all since you first noticed this?

If you did and this persists, please send us a screenshot of what you see on your end so that we can have a visual too.

    Thank you!

I see, thanks for the update JLeonardATL - in that case, can you try an advanced reinstall and let us know how it goes?

If the issue persists, please send us a screenshot to see what you get on your end.
