What is beacon.dropbox.com?

Hi. Can someone tell me what beacon.dropbox.com is? My virus checker keeps blocking it with the following message:

"chrome.exe attempted to establish a connection relying on an unmatching security certificate to beacon.dropbox.com. We blocked the connection to keep your data safe since the used certificate was issued for a different web address than the targeted one"

I could not find anything about it and, wanted to know if this is something I should/can safely add this to my exceptions.

Many thanks

Cindy

Thanks for getting back to me, CARoberts

In general, all Dropbox content should originate from one of the following domains and, from what I understand, this also includes the URL you provided. As such, you should be able to whitelisted so that you don't get a prompt from your security app.

    Hope this helps!

Hello CARoberts, thanks for posting your question on the Dropbox Community.

It sounds like you can add it to the exception list, however, just to make sure I have a clear understanding of your concern, could you clarify exactly when you get this message?

Is it when you try to navigate to the website directly from a web browser or via the desktop app?

    Keep me posted!

    Hi Lusil

I am using Dropbox through a web browser. It seems to appear when I am accessing via on a public wifi. I can still get into Dropbox, which is why I was curious as to what it is doing or what it is for.

I hope that helps. I will wait to hear from you before I add it to my exceptions.

    Thanks

    Cindy
