Can't find and delete accidental backup files

I use my Dropbox for one purpose: to sync my writing project files from my iPad to Scrivener on my desktop.

I plugged in an external hard drive on my desktop and got a pop up asking me if I wanted to backup the data to Dropbox. I meant to click no, but clicked yes instead and I couldn't stop it from doing it.

This accidental permission to upload an entire 2TB worth of photos and videos stored on an external hard drive cannot be undone or reversed as far as I can tell, and it has eaten up EVERY bit of space allowed on the free plan. I don't want to upgrade at this point and certainly not over a dumb mistake.

Now, Dropbox won't quit prompting me to upgrade and warning me I'm out of storage.

So I figure, no big deal. I can just login, look at the files, delete the backup and all will be well, right?

WRONG!

Nowhere in my files does there exist any of the files backed up from my external hard drive! None. Nowhere. Zilch. And my Dropbox is rendered unusable because now there is no storage to update the existing projects I actually wanted to use it for to connect my writing on the go seamlessly with my writing at my desktop at home.

I've tried to find a way to contact support, but the website basically makes it impossible except for these community things. There doesn't appear to be a way to contact support or way to actually submit a support ticket. I'm not running the free trial to extend my data or paying for Dropbox because I can't delete a backup file that doesn't appear to exist anywhere on my account. I'm very livid right now, and if I did ever wish to upgrade my plan, I'd strongly reconsider over this!

I googled how to delete backups stored to Dropbox and got the following:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://help.dropbox.com/organize/delete-dropbox-backup&ved=2ahUKEwiX-Y75n6KFAxV4kIkEHW7sDp0QFnoECBAQAw&usg=AOvVaw3AY954YG1ApnM3x6iTv0Xl

Delete your computer backup
  1. Click the Dropbox icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
  2. Click the Sync and Backups tab.
  3. Select the backup you'd like to delete.
  4. Under Adjust settings, click Delete.
  5. Click Keep content in folders on this PC/Mac or Leave content in Dropbox. ...
  6. Click Delete.

The app won't open on my windows computer, even when I right click it and run as admin. So I moved to the iPad to try the steps from that link. There is no backups tab. I can see "home", "files", "+", "photos" and "account"

Will somebody please help me figure this out so I don't have to delete my entire account and reopen an account just to solve this!

Hey Lissa419 - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.

Could you take a look at your backups page and let me know if you see the backed up files or folders there?

If you could also send us a screenshot of the desktop app's exact status as shown in your menu bar/system tray, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!
