Hi Sherly, thanks for reaching out to us here!
Through the Word Online app, there wouldn't be an option to open the file locally for editing.
To open your files in the local Microsoft apps for editing, you can use the Dropbox desktop app to sync your files locally to your computer. You can check out more info about the desktop app here.
It will create a local Dropbox folder on your computer which will sync any changes with your account online. This will allow you to open the files in local apps for editing and the changes you make with sync with your Dropbox account.
Let me know if this helps!

5 years agoOur team has multiple platforms in house. We use the "dropbox" link all the time to send files through Slack. This typically lets me view the file in the web and then "show file in Finder or Explorer" depending on OS. This stopped working 2 days ago. Now when I click, it shows me the file on dropbox.com not within my local system. This doesn't help me as I need to open and edit the file, so now I am forced to trace down the file path.
With both windows and mac in one office, this was a key way of how we worked, why was this removed?

Hi anonymous, happy Friday!
Can you walk me through the exact steps you follow on your end?
Have you made sure your desktop app is running?
Let me know more! - anonymous5 years ago
Megan,
I don't use the dropbox app on my desktop, I want all files to show up in Finder (I am Mac OS) when I get a file link from a team member it takes me to dropbox.com to see the file. From there I used to be able to click "show in finder" but that option is now gone . I only get the below image that that just shows "go to folder" rather than getting finder.

Hey anonymous I hope you enjoyed your weekend!
Is the app installed on your Mac?
If so, what's your syncing status and version?
Lastly, provided this is a shared link, do not forget to download and add the file to your Dropbox account first. - anonymous5 years ago
Megan Yes, the app is running and synced on my machine - this isn't a shared link, this is another employee telling me where the file is. You can click copy dropbox link
This is the way to get people quickly to a file across multiple machines and syncs. We have 10+ years of data on dropbox so navigating to a file isn't helpful. I do not want to download a local copy of the file, I want to go to the file and edit it quickly but with this shared link, I can no longer navigate directly to it.
