Well, I have just finished getting rid of all the grey X's and generic labels from all my photos.
I first right clicked the main "camera images" folder which contains all my pics - literally thousands of 'em, and changed them all to "online only" which took quite a while but I finished up with everything online and a lot more space on my hard drive.
I then right clicked the main file again and changed it to "local". This took a lot longer, like several hours, but I ended up with a perfect set of photos complete with thumbnails now stored on my hard drive where they belong.
I have no idea exactly when this problem first arose but from the look of this and other threads it has been going on for a while. I just hope my photos will stay fixed and my future uploads will not suffer the same problem.

My thumbnail previews if they do show up disappear once selecting them and inserting them into a program or email. Then when going back to the folder all the thumbnail previews are gone! What is this!? Im paying for the service.

That is exactly what I've been dealing with on both my Surface Pro since I added my Dropbox account, and on my Windows 10 laptop since I had a new hard drive added and had to reinstall Dropbox. Never had the problem before. Works fine on other laptop, but ready to switch services because I work with photos for marketing daily and it is a PAIN to switch between looking at the images online @dropbox.com, getting the image name, and then going into my account to pull the named photo over. Very frustrated. Talked with someone in a Dropbox chat a couple weeks ago and he indicated Dropbox is aware of the problem with Windows, but no idea when the solution. Has anyone had this situation resolved??

No one is going to address it with dropbox, we have thousands of images saved as well and now looking into switching services, they could care less about paying members having functionality, its unreal.

Yes I have to no success. Very frustrating. Wish I knew when they would get this worked out. I've even uninstalled and reinstalled Dropbox with the hope something would reset.

Same for me. Definitely a bug.
I have tried deleting thumbnails (made no difference), resetting the always display icon to make sure it isn't checked, moving between local and online only but as soon as I touch the imagine in any way I get this problem.
Annoying as I share Dropbox with less techie people who won't be able to faff around with settings to try unsuccessful workarounds.
If Dropbox aren't fixing this is going elsewhere the best option and if so which is the best alternative? Do I look at OneDrive as we all have that anyway. Frustrating through as I have been a big fan of Dropbox and got loads of folks to use it (bein the team geek within our group of friends and family)
