Is there a way to set a file to read-only?

My team is using Dropbox for creating and storing designs. A design is opened in Autodesk Inventor, and a design can exist out of a lot of components, and every component is a file.

The design also contains components that are released and must keep secured, so I want to prevent editing and saving files. These files are saved in our 'Library folders'

For sure I can change the access of each team member for these folders from full access (write, edit) to read-only, but then they cannot change and store any file.

Is there  a possibility to: 1) set all files in a folder to read-only (for every-one) 2) when needed, an individual file can be set to write by every team member.

Is this possible?

Hi pewill, thanks for bringing this to our attention.

You can use the file locking feature to lock individual files on your account. It can't be done in bulk to all files on a folder, however, you can do them manually.

If you have any further queries, feel free to message back.

    Thank you for your reply!

I investigated that solution but it cannot handle the job:

    - I can lock it, that is working, so others cannot work on it. But I stil can save and change the file not knowing it.

    - it is beeing unlocked after saving.

    - It's a lot of work to do it on each file

I also checked yesterday something different: changing the property to read-only. Problem: it is not changing the file on the computers of the other team-members. Is there a solution for that?

Update read-only status (or other metadata): with that, Dropbox can be used like a file-management system instead of only beeing Cloud storage. And the next thing: check-in or check-out a file (so put file from read-only)

Hey pewill, thanks for your feedback on the locking feature.

If you're referring to changing the properties through your OS (right-click > Properties etc.), it's not something that Dropbox can control, so you might need to look into it your computer's manufacturers for more info.
