Using Dropbox Backup with Backblaze or other Cloud Backups no longer works

I use Dropbox Backup but, importantly, I use the setting that means my files are also stored locally, offline, on my computer. For years, I have also used Backblaze as a "backup to my backup" - backing up my locally stored files to BackBlaze just in case I accidentally delete something from Dropbox or there is some catastrophic failure.

However, that no longer works. Due to a change in how Dropbox categorizes files - even those stored locally offline - most Cloud backup services like Backblaze can't back them up anymore. This has been discussed here, here, here, and confirmed in my conversations with BackBlaze support.

So I suppose my questions are - has anyone else experienced this? Are there any workarounds? And if not, do you feel comfortable with Dropbox Backup being your only cloud backup?

  • I am also a backblaze customer and have exactly the same issue. The issue isnt exclusive to Dropbox but all cloud storage systems using Mac that are in the new folder structure (i.e. 'Cloud Storage' folder).

For me, yes, I am ok with it as I have the extended recovery on my Dropbox meaning if something was to happen I can get it back. I also, sadly, cannot think of any work arounds at present.

So are you still paying for Backblaze?

I am yes, as I like the fact it still backs up 'everything else' if that makes sense?

So while its redundant on my data it still does the rest of my files (desktop, anything in Documents etc. as I dont use that directory as such).

Curious why you don't use Dropbox Backup on the rest of your files.
Desktop and Documents are the only folders that I DO backup with Dropbox.

Because it's diabolically designed and implemented unfortunately.

For example it moves the folders in to Dropbox meaning links to files stop working, it doesnt allow you to restore just individual files or folders and its totally clunky.

I hope you are aware that if you change an old file (e.g. older than 30 days or 365 days if you paid for that), the original version will no longer be available. So either you need to backup all your data every 30 / 365 days or you run the risk of loosing a file by accidentally changing it.
