How do I leave a shared Dropbox folder?
My friend invited me to share a 3gb folder she had. I accepted. Now I want to leave the folder and cant. I followed the advice from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZoTpNkvPCI
The problem is that...
- 7 years agoHey Padidto5,To remove yourself from the shared folder while youâre a member, try doing so from the website:
- Sign in to the website.
- Click Files.
- Navigate to the shared folder you want to permanently remove from your Dropbox account.
- Select the Share button that should appear next to the folder when you hover over it.
- Find your name under the list of emails.
- Click on the Can view/Can edit thatâs next to your name.
- Select Remove my access.
If youâre not seeing this option or youâre still having trouble with this, let me know.

3 years agoHey there, Amanda Lamb, thanks for posting here!
It's rather odd that you don't see the folder when you visit your account online.
Have you also checked your sharing page? Also, if you try to delete the folder from your desktop app directly, do you get any errors?
Let me know more!

Hi Megan,
Thanks for your help. I know right?! It's really strange. It's not on the sharing page. There is no option to leave the folder and when I click on "move to trash' it comes up with this:
"The Trash canât be completely emptied because âCircle Docsâ is locked. To empty everything in the Trash, including locked items, press the Option key while you choose Finder > Empty Trash."
But it's not in the trash... There's nothing in the trash. I've tried pressing the Option key to move to trash but it doesn't work. The owner of the folder is someone I don't know, so I can't ask them for any help.
I've gone through everything on the online account and the folder isn't there. I can't update my dropbox because of this.

Hi Amanda Lamb, in order to understand what you're seeing, could you attach screenshots showing the folder in Finder, and where it would be on the Dropbox site, and also the error you mentioned? Please ensure you remove any personal names or info.

Hi Jay,
I've attached three screenshots showing the folder in Finder, where it would be on the Dropbox site and the Shared page on the Dropbox site. As far as I'm aware I was told the owner of this folder deleted it years ago but for some reason it's stuck in my site.
Sure, please see attached.
Kind regardsAmanda

Hey Amanda! I checked your screenshots, but when looking at the one from your desktop app, itâs not really clear whatâs the small red syncing icon next to this folder. Is it possible to send one more thatâs a bit zoomed in?
Also, can you clarify whatâs the current syncing status of your Dropbox app? You can see this by hovering over the small Dropbox icon in your menu bar (close to your clock settings at the top).
