Sharing a read-only folder with somebody on a free account is not possible
I could not really believe that it is apparently not possible to share a folder with somebody who is on a free account and where the folder is bigger than their allowed quota when trying to share dir...

This is expected behavior as shared folders take up quota on all members' accounts.
This policy exists to prevent people from giving themselves unlimited storage space by stacking accounts and shared folders.
Hope this helps to clarify matters.

No it does not help and the explanation does not make sense at all: how would giving access (READ ONLY access at that) to my folder count on the other persons quota?
And why would it then work when sharing the link instead of sharing in a safe way?
