Tagging items in shared folders

I currently have the Basic plan and need to tag items in a non-profit's Business Advanced shared folder. If I upgrade to the individual Professional plan, can I do this, or do I have to have a license under their plan? I'm trying not to force them to add an Advanced license just for my use in a single shared folder. I hope this is clear. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi everyone! Reut here from the Dropbox product team. It’s my pleasure to announce that tags are now available to all Dropbox users! To get started, on dropbox.com, just select one or more files and type a tag name in the righthand panel.

As we continue working on tags, the product team and I would love to hear your feedback. Think tags are amazing, and just what you need? Feel that something’s still missing? Let us know here.

Hey Bulldog7, welcome to the Dropbox Community!

To be able to put tags on folders/files, you'll need to access those folders or files.

To access them, you don't really need to be a member of the Business team. But a team admin will need to invite you to access those folders.

If they have the correct settings for sharing folders externally, they'll be able to invite you without any problems.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hannah - Thank you for your reply. I was invited to share and edit the folder in question, and can do that, but can't seem to add tags. My question is, to access the tag function in the shared folder, do I need to have at least the minimum Business plan? Specifically if I upgrade my own account from personal Basic to individual Professional, will that enable me to add tags in their shared folder. I'm an old network admin type, so I realize I may be pushing the permissions here a bit. They are willing to let me have access via one of their Advanced users but I'm trying to see if I can keep them from having to do that, due to the cost to them. I hope that may be clearer. Thank you in advance for any insight.

It would appear that the tagging feature is indeed available only to Dropbox Business teams at the moment.

So you would have to be a member of the team, to be able to manually add tags to files and folders.

If you have any other questions, let me know!

Hi AKAbeats, thanks for posting here today!

If you're referring to Dropbox tags, then this feature is only available online. You can always use tags on your files through Finder, but these won't be reflected online.

    I hope this helps!
