If I delete files from my computer during a backup ...

I am working on a huge purge of large photo files. I will probably go from about 700 GB on my external drive to more like 150.

Meanwhile, a backup is in progress. It shows as having done 3% of the backup (after more than a day). However, during this time, I have gotten rid of lots of files, maybe 25% of the total. But the progress bar is still basing the progress on the amount of data that was there BEFORE I began the purge. Why are the deletions not affecting the progress bar, and now showing a smaller total of GBs to be uploaded?

Do I need to halt this backup, finish the purge, then start a new backup?

I thought the weeding I did today would have sped up the process. But that does not seem to be the case.

I don't know the specifics of how the backup feature works, but if it's like many other similar services, it likely indexes everything it needs to back up first, then proceeds to upload what it needs to. If that's the case, it may not know about the changes you've made until it tries to back up the files that you've already deleted.

Thanks, Rich. Much obliged. That would make sense.
