When you say the group's files, it sounds like you're referring to a shared folder - correct me if I'm wrong please.
If that's the case, note that shared folders take up space on all members and you can find more information about this here.

I refer to numerous shared folders, all accessible after logging in to my account. But I don't know what type of account (team?) they reside in or who is an admin. From what I can tell, all 5 of us can view the files uploaded by the others. I hope to have some answers shortly. Thanks!

MrMartyā so basically, once you got access to the group's files, all of the files in the new folder that you got access to started counting against your Basic Plan quota.
Ask the person who invited you to send a shared link to the folder instead.
How do shared links affect my storage space?
Links that have been shared with you donāt take up space in your account, and you can download those files to your computer.
If you download a file from a shared link, you can edit your downloaded copy. However, your edits wonāt sync with the original file that was shared with you.
