Cannot access Dropbox on Kindle Fire Max 11

Application affected, Dropbox, Kindle Fire Max 11

Device: Kindle Fire Max 11

Operating System: Fire OS 8.3.3.8

Dropbox App version: Latest

For the last few years I have used Dropbox almost daily, importing files into Songbook Pro.

At the end of December I retired my Fire Max 11 and bought a new one.

It has been working fine, but about a week ago I can no access Dropbox on my Fire Max 11 (I have plenty of room in Dropbox).

The problem first started when I would log into my Mac's Kindle Dropbox, import a file to it, but nothing new would appear on my Dropbox Kindle, just older items. The last one I imported worked fine, but then it could not be deleted from Dropbox when I was through with it.

Now when I would try to sign into Dropbox (on the Kindle) I get a message, "Can't connect to Dropbox. Make sure you're online, or try again later."

I can still access Dropbox on my desktop Mac, no problem.

I have twice deleted and reinstalled Dropbox on the Kindle, and numerous times restarted the Kindle. I have no problems with any other app.

One month ago I retired my Fire Max 11 and bought a new one. I still have it, I suppose I could reregister it and see if it would work?

You likely won't find any official help here. Dropbox is no longer listed in Amazon's app store, and Fire OS isn't supported by Dropbox. Yes, it's just Android and you can make it work by sideloading, but there's no guarantee that it will continue to work without issues.

The other potential issue that you could be facing is the recent change in certificates. I don't know if this affects the official apps or just third party apps, but I imagine it would be the same for both. The Dropbox API is using a new root certificate, and if you're using an old version of Dropbox that didn't receive the changes, you would likely have connection issues now.

I too have found my Dropbox is impacted.  It no longer syncs and hence can't use it as intended on my kindle which I use for work. I actually have a new kindle enroute and am regretting that purchase if Dropbox won't work on it.

You could start an Ideas | The Dropbox Community for a new Kindle Fire OS app?

It's been a long time (10 years maybe?) since Dropbox was listed on the Amazon App store and officially supported the Kindle. I don't see them reversing that decision after all these years, but the only way they'll know that it's still in demand is to do as Mark suggested and start a new idea requsting it.

Another option, and I don't know if this will still work, is to find a newer version of the Dropbox APK file (app installer for Android) and attempt to side load it, assuming that's still possible. Haven't used my Kindle in years.

I just pulled my Fire HD 10 Plus out of the draw to test. I didn't have Dropbox on it previously, but I do have the Google Play store sideloaded. I was able to open the Play store and install the latest Dropbox without issue. Signed in and I can access all my files.

So the problem that most people are having is likely just an old Dropbox version that can no longer connect due to the recent root certificate changes. Find an updated APK file, or sideload the Play store and install Dropbox from there, and you'll likely be fine.

Where can I download without risk?

The safest route is to sideload the Google Play store and just install Dropbox from there, as it will be the official installer for Android.

I can't offer a location for downloading APK files, but just a little bit of research on Google will find what you need. I'd start by looking into the Fire Toolbox.
