Dropbox Client for Linux on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS- icon not clickable.

Guys, I've noticed a bug on Dropbox Client on Ubuntu 23.10 and the same occurs on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS after a installed it from scratch on my machine. It's really a bug on the app on desktop.

The problem is: the app on system tray doesnt open or show anything until the system is blocked to block screen and returns putting password. After that it works normally as it should. I recorded a short video showing the problem with you:

How can this issue be solved? Is this the right place to report it?

God bless you all!

  • Guys, I've noticed the bug is gone here on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS o Gnome 46 and Wayland. I just started my notebook and the icon worked flawlessly. If I encounter another bug I'll relate it here.

This is the version where it started to work:

    raulgrangeiro@RAUL-PC-2:~$ dropbox version
    Dropbox daemon version: 212.4.5767
    Dropbox command-line interface version: 2024.04.17

    God bless you all!

    Thanks for the reply, Kay39.

If you're looking for some kind of UI for the Dropbox app, the only thing you'll find is the sync history/preferences tray window, which should open when clicking on the Dropbox icon in your system tray

But the app is indeed necessary for the files to sync, i.e. get uploaded to your account.

Just to confirm, are you having issues with the commands in the article on how to uninstall the app?

I'll try to help you with that. Open your terminal and paste these commands I'll show you:

    • dpkg --list | grep dropbox

It shows if dropbox is installed. If not, then paste this command:

    • sudo apt install dropbox

And then show me what the terminal sends to you.

The instructions said to go to the App Center of installed apps, but it said that it was not installed.  I've just heard from someone else on your help team with instructions using the terminal. He asked for the results after I ran his instructions, and I have just sent them to him/her. It showed Dropbox was already installed and up to date.

I have been looking for GUI, the only kind of apps I've ever seen or used. But as I have said, clicking on the icon in the apps does nothing, neither does right clicking an saying "new window".

I did a test, created a document tot;ed TEST, moved it into the Dropbox folder on my computer, and now it appears, properly, under my Documents/Personal Documents/TEST on the website. Whether it is syncing or not I do not know.

More basically, I'm wondering how necessary the app is. Hannah, on Dropbox staff, says it is the only way to sync. I have the Dropbox folder on my home folder and if I move a file or folder I want to backup into that folder, it appears on the Dropbox website, so I assume it is backed up. But is it being synced? If not, how do I accomplish that? Do I need the app? She or someone said that the app creates that Dropbox folder.. Mybe so, but it's been there for a long time. That is the way I backed up things to Dropbox ten years or so ago, on a Windows system.  I feel like I'm missing something in my understanding. Incidentally, using the "Files" file manager, all the files and folders I added to the Dropbox folder, including one I just created called "Test" show green check marks, which I had thought meant they are backed up. Are they syncing?

Hey Kay39, happy Friday, I hope you're doing well!

Essentially when you install our desktop app, a Dropbox folder is created locally on the device, which mirrors your files online and vice versa.

When you add content inside the Dropbox folder you should be able to see them when visiting your account online. If they do, that means the app is syncing.

If you need something else, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help every step of the way.

It sounds like perhaps it's doing what it should.  I was looking for an app that llike what I'm used to for an app.

This revives the indicator, however, the ghost of the frozen indicator is still there. Any idea how to remove it? If I stop and restart Dropbox from command line, I am back to the same problem.

Hey ironfrown, do you mind sending over a few screenshots of what you see on your end? We can check them out and see what else you can try.
