Dropbox Update on Mac > Alias Folder on Desktop

Hi.

Downloading the new update on my Mac put an alias folder on my Desktop, with the Dropbox folder under locations. I'd like to work with the alias folder and a test file ended up in both folders, suggesting this is fine.

Could anyone confirm that this is a proper configuration and I'm all set? I did a re-boot and things appear unchanged.

Thanks.

  • Hey LikesBooks, thanks for posting to the Dropbox Community today!

Indeed, the new Dropbox for macOS app will install the Dropbox folder on ~/Library/CloudStorage, which will be accessible from Locations.

Is this what you see on your end?

Can you send me a screenshot of the alias folder, so I can check it out?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Hannah,

Here's a screenshot. On the left you'll see the Dropbox folder in the locations folder. On the right is the alias folder on my desktop.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for that, LikesBooks!

Can you check if the Dropbox application on your computer has finished syncing and is 'up to date'?

You can hover over the Dropbox icon, to see that.

Also, which app version do you see there?

Everything appears up to date. Changes I make to the alias dropbox folder files do show in the Location dropbox folder,  so it appears that it is a working alias.  Below are screen shots of Dropbox activity.

    Thanks.

Hi LikesBooks, since the alias is updating properly, then you could use it.

However, keep in mind that aliases in general, aren’t recommended from us, for referencing Dropbox from a different location on your computer, or referencing a different location on your computer from Dropbox.

Since it is an alias do you foresee any problem if I delete it?

Hi LikesBooks, I do not think so.

Generally, we recommend that you remove these symlinks from your Dropbox account. You can do that by accessing the symlink file path, and remove the content by dragging them elsewhere on your computer (if you don't want them deleted).
