I still have the same issue. It seems to have been caused by the update that also changed the icon and sync status indicators in Windows. This happened last week, and since then, syncing has been continually indexing between 1,000 and 15,000 files for me. That number does not appear to be decreasing but looks fairly random to me.

If you haven't already, please restart your computer and let me know if that helps or not.
Also, if you could send me a screenshot of what you see when you hover over your Dropbox icon, it would be really helpful.
